CLAREMONT — A 20-year-old Newport man was arrested and charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon after police said he fired shots on Twistback Road in Claremont and then led police on a chase through the city before he crashed his vehicle on Sugar River Road.

Kaleb Potter was scheduled to be arraigned in Sullivan County Court on Wednesday, according to a news release issued by Claremont police.

Police said they were called to Twistback Road after they received a report of gunshots fired around 7 p.m. Tuesday and were told by witnesses that the shots appeared to involve an “older, red Subaru Forester with two occupants inside,” the news release said.

The suspect’s vehicle was subsequently spotted by police on Sullivan Street, failed to yield to police orders to stop, and then “fled at a high rate of speed through downtown Claremont and onto Chestnut Street and then Sugar River Drive until it crashed where the road turns to gravel,” police said.

The vehicle’s two occupants were taken into custody. Additional charges are expected, police said.

Potter has prior convictions on charges of reckless conduct, resisting arrest and falsifying physical evidence in addition to violation of probation and parole, according to New Hampshire state court records.

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Capt. Christopher Allen at 603-542-7010 or call the Claremont Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 603-542-7026.
