QUECHEE — Hartford High junior Jaden Poirier shot a 2-over-par 36, including an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole, to lead the Hurricanes to a high school golf win over Rutland and Woodstock on Thursday.

Senior Joseph Barwood and sophomore Matthew Tsouknakis both shot a 38 on the Quechee Club’s Lakeland course, and freshman Thomas Thorburn finished with a 41 for Hartford’s 153 total. Poirier was also the match’s co-medalist.

Woodstock senior Ethan Dean shot a 43 and senior Austin Bloch and junior Owen Kross a 46 with senior Will Coates completing the scoring for the Wasps with a 47. Woodstock junior Tori McNamara also had a 46.

Windsor, which did not have enough players for a team score, had a 41 from junior Lee Bevis, a 61 by Helen Ennis and a 55 by Eban Margolis. Hartford and Woodstock play at Woodstock on Tuesday.

Team scores: Hartford 153, Rutland 167, Woodstock 182.

Hanover third

SALEM, N.H. — Senior Dylan Jopp shot a 42 for Hanover and junior Adam Goodney a 43, but an incorrect scorecard signed by a player cost the Bears a second-place team finish at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands, Hanover coach Patrick Pelletier said.

“Growing pains are going to happen with so many players on our team brand new to tournament golf,” Pelletier said. “Ultimately, though, that’s on me as a coach to make sure everyone is focused.”

Keene’s Orion Murphy won the individual medal with a round of 35.

The Bears (4-5) travel to Bishop Guertin next Friday.

Girls soccer Hanover 3, Windham 0

HANOVER — Bears junior Sydney McLaughlin scored twice in the first half, assisted on the first goal by junior Maeve Lee and on the second strike by junior Sophie Wise, to power Hanover to victory.

Lee scored the NHIAA Division I match’s final goal, assisted by McLaughlin.

The Bears improved to 3-3-0 and dropped the Jaguars to 0-6-0. Windham has been outscored by a combined 21-3 through the early season.

Hanover is at Nashua South on Saturday.

Fall Mountain 3Newport 0

LANGDON, N.H. — The Tigers dropped to 3-2-0 and will travel to Inter-Lakes on Tuesday.

“We put together a solid effort in first half to play to a tie,” Newport coach Garry McCall said. “We let them get on the board early in second half. We didn’t let up but couldn’t get the forward bite we needed.”

Springfield 3, Hartford 1

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Hurricanes got a goal from sophomore Izzy Sirois, assisted by sophomore Geneva Durgin, in a loss to the Cosmos.

Hartford (1-3-0) is at Windsor on Wednesday.

Boys soccer Sharon 1White River Valley 0

SOUTH ROYALTON — Sophomore Luke Miller scored early in the second half with an assist from junior Zabrien McGee as the Phoenix edged the Wildcats to get into the win column for the first time this season.

“It was a very close game the entire match,” Sharon coach Grayson Levy said. “Both sides had chances in the first half.”

Levy said his team defended well in the second half and got a critical goal-line clearance by Daniel Piasecki to preserve the lead.

White River Valley had 17 shots and received three saves from junior goalie Tattin Griffin.

“The boys improved significantly from our last game. We just could not put the ball in the net,” WRV coach Alex Montano said.

White River Valley (1-2-0) travels to Sharon (1-2-0) for a rematch on Monday.

Mascoma 2White Mountains 1

WEST CANAAN — Goals from junior James Thomas and senior Zach Thompson moved the Royals to 4-1-0. Freshman Brayden Pierce had an assist, and sophomore keeper Matt Favreau had five saves.

Mascoma hosts Stevens on Monday.

Woodstock 3Stratton Mountain 2

WOODSTOCK — The Bears got on the board first, but the Wasps answered with three straight goals and held on for the win.

Senior Rowan Smail scored first for Woodstock with an assist by junior Bode Wood. Junior Ezra Lockhart put home a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead after senior Declan McCullough was pulled down. Woodstock went up 3-1 on score by McCullough at close range off a scramble in front of the net. Stratton Mountain made it close with three minutes to play, but Woodstock controlled the game the rest of the way. Ethan Zayas had three saves for Woodstock.

After a lackluster first half, the Wasps came out stronger after the break.

“The boys brought a little more intensity to the second half and carved out a number of chances, converting just enough to get the win,” Woodstock coach Rob Stainton said.

Woodstock (2-0-0) hosts Rivendell next Tuesday.

Field hockey Bellows Falls 7, Windsor 1

WESTMINSTER, Vt. — Sophomore Piper Vivian had the Yellowjackets’ only goal with an assist from a senior Alexina Peckinpaugh against the Terriers. Junior goaltender Sydney Perry had 13 saves.

Windsor (1-4-0) is home to Brattleboro on Tuesday.

KINGSTON, N.H. — Senior Ashlee Blashock had 10 saves for the Raiders, who are now 2-2-1. Lebanon visits Souhegan on Tuesday.

Volleyball Hanover 3, Laconia 1

HANOVER — The Bears won the last two sets after the teams split the first two.

Sophomore Laura Schaner and junior Rosa Bradley combined for 11 kills. Junior Annika Lackstrom had four kills and three blocks and seniors Lilly Clapp and Josie Hall combined for 33 digs.

“Talia Daft and Darien Ray led the serving, which was a big strength collectively tonight,” Hanover coach Megan McFarland said.

Hanover (3-1) travels to Souhegan on Monday.

Scores: 25-17, 17-25, 25-12, 25-22.

Cross country Thetford finishes mid-pack in home meet

THETFORD — The Thetford girls finished third of five schools and the boys fourth out of seven in a meet on TA’s Woods Trail that also included Hartford, Woodstock and White River Valley.

Wildcats junior Anita Miller won the girls race, finishing in 21 minutes, 45 seconds. Thetford senior Madelyn Durkee was fifth in 23:03, with sophomore teammate Ava Hayden sixth in 23:23. WRV’s Anya Young took ninth in 23:42, and Woodstock junior Logan Knox 10th in 23:48. Stratton Mountain won the meet, with Burr & Burton edging out Thetford for second and Woodstock finishing fifth.

The top local boys finisher was Woodstock senior Zed McNaughton, who took third with a time of 18:34. Thetford junior Ben Mattern was right behind him in fourth in 18:41.

Woodstock senior Danny Smith and sophomore James Underwood and Thetford sophomore Brady Sloop were also in the top 10. Hartford’s top finisher was senior Gavin Farnsworth, who took 12th in 20:16. Burr & Burton finished first as a team, with Woodstock in third, Thetford fourth and Hartford fifth.
