NEWPORT — Tim Beard has been appointed to the Newport School Board as a replacement for Rhonda Callum-King, who resigned last month, according to SAU 43.

Beard was among four candidates who ran for two seats on the board in March. He finished third, 19 votes behind Steve Morris.

Callum-King announced her resignation at a board meeting in early June amid turmoil on the board. She cited the behavior of fellow board member Bert Spaulding as her reason for resigning, claiming, as others have, that Spaulding is disrespectful and verbally abusive to staff, administrators and other board members.

Spaulding has responded by saying he is pushing for policies that will improve academic performance in the schools and that in turn will help students in the long run.
