WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Hartford High baseball starting pitcher Matt Hayes allowed seven hits and no runs during 6⅔ innings on Tuesday night, striking out 13 batters and walking four during the Hurricanes’ 7-1 Vermont Division II first-round playoff victory over Otter Valley at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
Sixth-seeded Hartford (8-8) exploded for four runs during the third inning and added three more during the sixth, advancing to face third-seeded Enosburg Falls (13-3) on Friday afternoon. Eleventh-seeded Otter Valley, which had seven hits, finished 6-11.
Hartford’s Sean Dunton and Nate Clark each had a single and a double, and Drew Martin had two singles. Colin Vielleux struck out the only batter he faced to end the game.
WINDSOR — The No. 7-seeded Yellowjackets allowed single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to see Vergennes pull in front for good in the VPA Division III first round.
Windsor managed just five hits as runs were tough to come by against Vergennes starting pitcher Tyler Kimball. Richie Young and Austin Gauld each had two hits for the Jacks.
Lee Bevis pitched into the third inning for Windsor, allowing two earned runs on three walks and a hit.
Johnny Clark pitched five innings of relief, striking out five while allowing three runs on six hits and two walks.
Windsor (6-10) graduates Gauld, Young, Dalton Clifford, Adam Dufour and Ryan Connolly.
MONTPELIER — The Wasps saw their season come to an end at the No. 6 seed Solons in the first round of the VPA Division III playoffs.
Woodstock will graduate Alex Rice, Memphis Begin, Wyatt Begin, Robby Macri and Chase Conway.
DOVER, N.H. — The Bears’ postseason run ended with a shutout loss against No. 2 seed Dover, a team Hanover did not face during regular season play, in the NHIAA Division I semifinals.
Eleanor van Aalst lost in a tiebreaker in a singles match that lasted over two hours. Hanover (12-5) will lose just two players, van Aalst and Natalie Feyrer, to graduation.
MORETOWN, Vt. — The Hurricanes participated in the postseason for the first time since 2014 but were unable to win a match against Harwood in the VPA Division II first round.
Several games were competitive, but the Canes’ closest contest came at No. 4 singles, where Silvia Hale lost, 6-1, 6-2. Hartford will graduate only one senior, Jen Albert.
