TUNBRIDGE — A share of the Tunbridge World’s Fair has been sold for $10,700. The actual cost, which includes a buyers premium of 15%, brought the total to $12,600.
The winning bidder is a Vermonter who purchased it as a surprise gift for a family member, said a representative from the Thomas Hirchak Co., which auctioned the share on behalf of an estate holder. Twenty-seven people bid over 100 times for the share.
The share was one of 100 issued in 1867 when the fair started. It was initially listed for $10 in mid-January and quickly garnered bids into the thousands.
The share has no monetary value; the winner receives two tickets to the fair each year in addition to a single vote at the annual meeting.
