NEWBURY, Vt. — A 72-year-old Bradford, Vt., man died while swimming in Halls Lake Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.
Witnesses told police they saw the man, identified as James Peabody, swimming in the Newbury lake early Sunday afternoon. Around 12:45 p.m. when Peabody appeared “unresponsive” in the water, witnesses called police and bystanders pulled Peabody out of the lake, according to the release.
Though bystanders tried life-saving measures, police and other emergency responders pronounced Peabody dead at the scene, the release said.
The Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy, but police said they don’t believe his death is suspicious.
Family members of Peabody could not be reached for comment Monday.
