FAIRLEE — A Hartford woman is in critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a pickup truck she was a passenger in struck several trees and a parked vehicle in Fairlee early Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, the driver is facing several charges after police say he attempted to evade State Police and then fled the scene after the crash.
Jake St. Martin, of Newbury, was charged with driving under the influence serious bodily injuring resulting, gross negligent operation, and leaving the scene of an accident serious bodily injury resulting, according to a Vermont State Police news release.
St. Martin, 29, is currently being held at the North East Regional Correctional Complex and is scheduled to be arraigned in court in Orange County on Monday.
Police say they initially attempted to stop St. Martin shortly after midnight when he nearly struck a State Police cruiser on Maurice Roberts Memorial Highway.
The trooper tried to pull him over but St. Martin fled.
His truck was later found on Lake Morey Road, where it crashed and the trooper reported seeing St. Martin attempt to run into the woods.
An Initial investigation revealed that St. Martin was unable to navigate a corner, hit several trees and a parked vehicle, according to a news release.
The crash left Gabrielle Lamotte, 25, with life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted to DHMC, where she’s listed in critical condition, according to the news release.
Another passenger, Casey Sylvester, 29, of Bradford, Vt., also sustained serious injuries and is listed in stable condition.
