THETFORD — White River Valley senior Curtis Barry threw a five-inning perfect game as the Wildcats defeated Thetford Academy, 11-0, in baseball action on Saturday.

Barry achieved the feat by throwing just 48 pitches — 40 of which were strikes. Six of the eight balls he threw came in his final inning. He struck out seven of the 15 batters he faced. This was the first perfect game in White River Valley (3-0) baseball’s short three-year history.

“He only threw eight pitches in the first inning, and then he threw eight pitches again in the second inning. We knew that he was rolling,” Wildcats head coach Devin Cilley said. “Curtis just kept dealing and kept throwing a lot of strikes. His curveball worked well today. He was on all day.”

WRV senior second baseman Jacob Barry opened the scoring in the second inning with a grand slam — also the first in program history. He finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday as WRV hosts Leland and Gray and Thetford (1-1) hosts Montpelier.

Nathaniel Parkin, who went 2-for-3 on the day, led off the six-run sixth inning with a double. From there, Rivendell’s patience sparked the comeback. The Raptors tied the game and took the lead as the next six batters all walked or were hit by a pitch. Ty Newman (3-for-4) added an RBI single in the big inning to give them some cushion. Newman was Rivendell’s starting pitcher, striking out eight over five innings.
