NEWPORT, N.H. — A Claremont man accused of firing shots at another man Monday has been ordered held in jail pending his next court date.
Kevin Dooley, 30, waived his arraignment, which was scheduled for Friday morning in Sullivan Superior Court, and the judge entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf, according to court records. The judge adopted prosecutors’ proposed bail order to hold Dooley in jail based on “evidence that the defendant’s release will endanger the safety of the defendant or of the public,” according to the proposed order.
Dooley faces charges of reckless conduct with a weapon and criminal threatening with a deadly weapon following the incident just after 7 a.m. Monday near a home on Madison Place in Claremont. Police claim Dooley fired shots at a man he knew during a disagreement. No one was injured.
Dooley has told police that the gun went off when the man tried to punch him, and that Dooley blacked out following the first shot, according to a police affidavit.
A future court date for Dooley has not been scheduled.
