ENFIELD — Enfield Fire Chief Fred Cummings, is stepping down after two years on the job, according to a resignation letter he published this week.
In the letter, which Cummings posted on the Enfield Listserv on Tuesday, he wrote that he is leaving professional firefighting after 30 years and is taking a job in another field. His last day is April 10, Cummings wrote.
“I am leaving with mixed emotions. I will be leaving Enfield and starting a whole new chapter in life, as I have been offered and accepted a new job halfway across the country,” Cummings wrote in the letter. “While I am sad to leave the area where I was born and raised, I am excited about this new opportunity.”
Cummings, a former Selectboard member for nine years and longtime firefighter in Enfield, started his career at 16 years old as fire explorer in Canaan before joining their department at 18 years old, he wrote in the letter. In 2001, he came to Enfield and joined its fire and EMS, serving as EMS chief before leaving that department and working exclusively as a firefighter. In 2019, he was appointed to the top fire position in Enfield.
“I have made some great friends along the way. I will miss everyone that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know,” Cummings wrote.
