More than 50 inmates at New Hampshire’s largest jail have tested positive for the coronavirus, and officials are still awaiting results for an additional 135.
The Valley Street Jail in Manchester began testing inmates last week after attorneys raised concerns and a judge warned of “deliberate indifference to the health of inmates,” New Hampshire Public Radio reported. The positive cases amount to about a quarter of all inmates at the facility.
Superintendent Willie Scurry said the infections were identified among two units and that anyone who tested positive is quarantined in their cell. He said last week that 22 staff members also have tested positive.
Two residents of a Craftsbury, Vt., elder home have died after both testing positive in an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at the facility.
One resident of Craftsbury Community Care Center, a woman over age 90, died Christmas Day, state Department of Health spokesperson Ben Truman said. The other resident, a man over age 70, died last Tuesday.
Both deaths — reported first by the Caledonian Record — were associated with the coronavirus, Truman said, and were the only COVID-19-related deaths in Orleans County between Dec. 21 and Sunday.
“These (details) are statistical, but when I write about them or Dr. Levine talks about it, we honestly don’t forget they were people who lived, were loved and will be missed,” Truman said.
Penelope Doherty, a board member at the senior living facility, confirmed the deaths.
As of last Wednesday, 28 people had been connected to the outbreak at the center, with 15 residents and 13 staff members testing positive for the virus.
That meant nearly two-thirds of the 24-bed senior living facility’s residents had contracted the virus. The nonprofit care facility reported its first positive test results Dec. 11.
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — All the residents of a Brattleboro nursing home have tested negative for the virus that causes COVID-19 after a staff member tested positive.
One resident whose test was inconclusive is going to be retested.
Dane Rank, the administrator of the Thompson House rehabilitation and nursing center, said all residents and staff will be retested on Monday.
“We pray those results will verify our first round of testing,” Rank said.
