BARRIE, CANADA — David A. Westover, 56, passed away peacefully at home, June 4, 2020 after a valiant fight against Stage 4 melanoma cancer. His eldest daughter, Julia Westover, was holding his hand in his final moments.
Formerly of Claremont and Lebanon, NH, running and cycling were central to David’s life. In his senior year at Stevens HS, David won both XC and 3200m outdoor state championships. His athletic and academic successes then led him to compete and study at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.
Following college, David hung up the running shoes and switched to racing bicycles for the Sunapee Racing Team. At the beginning of 2019, he took time away from work to ride his bike throughout the eastern US seaboard from Maine to Florida. He always stopped on the way to connect with his valued family and friends.
David’s professional career always focused on sports. His career began at Mowatt Cycles in Lebanon, NH. He then opened The Sport Exchange, his own used sporting goods store on the Lebanon mall. In 2002, he moved to Barrie, ON as the General Store Manager of National Sports.
David loved every Boston based sports team. No matter where he was, he may be the only one in a Bruins jersey but he was rooting for “the boys from Boston.” Sports aside, David’s true love was his two daughters. He loved to see Andrea dance ballet and loved to watch Julia, a Northeastern track star in her own right, dominate the throwing circle. There was no greater joy to David than spending time with his girls!
David is survived by mother, Shirley Lusco; father, Verne Westover; daughters Julia Westover and Andrea Westover; siblings Pamela Young, Don Westover, Jeff Westover, Shawn Westover; close friend Ellen Dijkman Dulkes and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Celebration of David’s life will happen at a later date. His family and friends are planning a fall memorial walk/run event in Moody Park, Claremont where David’s prolific running career began.
