HANOVER — Football defensive back Isiah Swann and track standout Cha’Mia Rothwell came away with respective athlete of the year awards during Dartmouth College’s Celebration of Athletic Excellence on Tuesday evening.

The college’s athletic department held the ceremony online with the campus closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Swann earned the Alfred E. Watson Trophy as the school’s top male student-athlete. The Arizona native made three All-American teams for the second straight year after helping the Big Green to a share of the Ivy League championship.

He graduates as the Dartmouth football record-holder in career and season interceptions; he signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals upon last season’s conclusion.

Rothwell, from Durham, N.C., won the Class of 1976 Award as top female student-athlete for the second time, having claimed it as a freshman in 2017.

Rothwell won nine Ivy League titles during her career, the last in the 60-meter dash at the indoor Ivy Heptagonals at Cornell on March 1. She dedicated the victory to sprints coach Sandra Ford-Centonze, who died in December from cancer.

Rothwell also earned the Kenneth Archibald Prize, the department’s top honor, given to a senior who has best combined athletic and academic success with “high moral character.” Rothwell will graduate with a 3.57 grade-point average in psychology.

Other award winners from Tuesday’s ceremony, according to a Dartmouth news release:

Class of 1948 Scholar-Athlete Awards: Men’s golfer Jason Liu and women’s soccer player Bonnie Shea, given to juniors who have combined excellence in sports and academics.

Class of 1950 Award: Women’s rugby player Maya Perkins, for dedication to community service.

Timothy Wright Ellis 1955 Memorial Award: Football’s Brandon Hester, chosen by Dartmouth men’s sports captains for “extracurricular and scholastic drive.”

Agnes Kurtz Award: Women’s soccer player Mariel Gordon, as the Dartmouth woman combining academic achievement with dedication toward women’s sports.

GOLFVermont Open has date, waiting to confirm

FAIRLEE — The Jeff Julian Memorial Vermont Open golf championship has been rescheduled for July 27-29, but it will be two weeks before host Lake Morey Country Club can confirm it will still be staged.

In a Friday email, director of golf Justin Bonnett said the course will decide the tournament’s fate on June 15.

Factors will include “ongoing restrictions put in place by the state.”

Gov. Phil Scott allowed Vermont courses to open for business in early May with caveats that included play limited to in-state residents and those who have self-quarantined in the state for 14 days.

The tournament was postponed from its usual mid-June date by the pandemic. State opens in Massachusetts and New Hampshire that were scheduled on either side of the Vermont Open’s original date were canceled.
