HARTLAND — Depot Road in Hartland will remain closed for the remainder of the construction season as crews work to replace a bridge that spans Interstate 91.
For several months, drivers will be detoured nearly 5 miles along Ferry Road and through a gravel pit owned by Pike Industries to connect to Route 5.
Motorists on Interstate 91 could also see periods where the highway is reduced to one lane in either direction, according to the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
The 359-foot bridge, about a half-mile north of Hartland Three Corners off Route 5, dates to 1965. Its deck is rated in “poor” condition and bridge inspectors have seen heavy saturation, cracking, and efflorescence in the deck and pier caps.
The $4.8 million bridge replacement project will use new technology that will see the existing six-span bridge replaced with two short, single-span bridges, according to VTrans.
