HANOVER — The Lubrano sisters apparently have fans in Major League Lacrosse.
The league’s Boston Cannons recognized the trio’s recent fundraising work by bestowing an honorary pick upon them at the MLL Draft on Monday night. The honorary draft choices are a first-time thing for the outdoor league, which was to begin its 20th season later this month. Each of the league’s six franchises announced an honorary selection to highlight people involved in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The Cannons recognized the Lubranos for their recent Sweat2Support virtual run completed on April 19. The three, all Hanover High School graduates who played collegiate women’s lacrosse, set an initial goal of $10,000 for their event but ended up raising more than $27,000 for the Center for Disease Philanthropy’s COVID-19 Response Fund.
Sophia (Bowdoin) and Georgia Lubrano (Colby) both played lacrosse and soccer in college. Amelia, a junior on the Bowdoin women’s lacrosse team, had her spring season canceled by the pandemic.
“Thank you to the Boston Cannons and the MLL for recognizing some of the incredible efforts to give back during this difficult time,” Georgia Lubrano wrote in a Cannons news release. “We’re looking forward to cheering the team on in the future, and until then we’re sending our best to all the players, their families and the entire Boston Cannons community.”
Dartmouth’s Martin selected: Dartmouth senior Ben Martin was chosen by the first-year Connecticut Hammerheads in Monday’s MLL draft.
Martin went with the 20th selection in the 48-player draft. He’s the 10th Big Green player chosen in the league’s history and the first since Jack Korzelius went to the now-defunct Atlanta Blaze in 2018.
“He’s been one of our hardest workers, toughest players and a great leader,” Dartmouth coach Brendan Callahan said in a news release. “Our program has grown tremendously in the last few years, and Ben has been a huge part of that.”
Martin played in all four games of his coronavirus-shortened senior season, sharing the team lead with eight goals. The Arlington, Va., native started all but one of his 43 career games at Dartmouth, scoring 82 goals and netting 110 points. He was the Big Green’s top goal scorer or runner-up in all four of his varsity years.
Quirion nets school honor: The Upper Valley Nighthawks’ Anthony Quirion was named the male international student of the year by Lamar University’s athletic department over the weekend.
The senior from Dixville, Quebec, batted .324 over the 17 games the Cardinals played this spring before their season was called off by the pandemic. He carried a .289 average with eight homers and 26 RBIs in 2019 for the Beaumont, Texas, school.
A third baseman who can also catch and play other infield positions, Quirion was to rejoin the Nighthawks for a third season this summer before the recent cancellation of the New England Collegiate Baseball League campaign.
