CLAREMONT — The Zoning Board of Adjustment will take up a proposal again next month for a company to handle construction and demolition waste on Industrial Boulevard.
The board continued a hearing until April 6 on an application from American Recycling for three variances and a special exception to allow an enclosed C&D operation at a railroad siding on Industrial Boulevard.
City Planner Scott Osgood said Tuesday that the Zoning Board wants more information on noise levels and also wants to see an engineered building plan, a traffic report, proposed truck routes, hours of operation, the building’s ventilation system and details on the recycling part of the operation.
American Recycling proposes to enlarge the existing building to enclose a portion of the tracks. C&D material would be dumped on a concrete floor, sorted for recyclables and then loaded onto train cars for transport out of state. An estimated 500 tons of material a day would be processed, the company said last summer.
The plan, as well as a previous one for an outdoor facility that was withdrawn last August, has met staunch opposition from residents who say the operation will create health and safety hazards, destroy roads, hurt property values and harm the quality of life for nearby residential neighborhoods.
