WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Windsor High varsity girls basketball team is small enough that coach Bruce Mackay feels compelled to bring up a few JV players each game for added depth. Some play two jayvee quarters and up to three with the varsity. Others, like sophomore Elliot Rupp, play just one junior varsity period in order to be able to play a full varsity game, if needed.

Rupp made the most of Saturday’s date at Hartford, scoring a career-high 22 points to lead the Yellowjackets to a 71-38 defeat of the Hurricanes at Hanley Gymnasium.

Rupp and senior Olivia Rockwood needed a quarter to warm up, as Hartford (9-7) kept Windsor (15-2) to a 10-10 tie through the opening period. Rupp then potted 12 points and Rockwood netted another seven in a 27-8 second period that decided the contest.

Rockwood finished with 21 points and Peyton Richardon added seven for the Jacks, who will get a big test from undefeated VPA Division II frontrunner Fair Haven at home on Wednesday.

WELLS RIVER, Vt. — With coach Dennis Fitzgerald away on personal business, the Raptors (5-9) did much of the on-court decision-making for fill-in coach Tim Goodwin in a loss to the Bucks.

Goodwin and his players concentrated on shutting down BMU star Lauren Alley, holding her scoreless in the opening quarter. The Bucks’ Kolby Nelson (14 points), however, opened the Rivendell defense with nine first-period points, creating room for Alley (game-high 22 points) to find her game.
