FOX RIVER GROVE, Ill. — Ford Sayre Ski Council jumpers Evan Nichols and Caleb Zuckerman have been busy through the month of January, racking up strong results during the US Cup’s Five Hills Tournament throughout the Midwest.
The tourney has brought the two ski jumpers to hills in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, wrapping up last weekend at the Norge Ski Club near Chicago. After a slew of runner-up finishes, Nichols won Sunday’s meet on Fox River Grove’s 70-meter jump, scoring 226.5 points. Zuckerman also had his best result in Illinois, taking third place with 205.2 points.
Nichols placed second at Eau Claire, Wis., and at Minneapolis. Zuckerman finished fifth twice, at Minneapolis and Ishpeming, Mich.
Nichols ranks second and Zuckerman fourth in US Cup points heading into the Snowflake Large-Hill Tournament in Westby, Wis., this weekend.
LEBANON — Ford Sayre brought together about 50 athletes from around the Northeast for its annual ski jumping and Nordic combined meet at the Storrs Hill Ski Area.
Jump competition occurred on Storrs Hill’s three jumps, after which about half of the field competed in the cross country skiing portion of the Nordic combined. Highlights:
U10 girls (10-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Emmeline Saint-Fleur and Caroline Chor finish 2-3.
U10 boys (10-meter jump): Lebanon Outing Club’s Timothy Tourville wins, with Ford Sayre’s Elias Deebs second.
Open class boys (10-meter jump): Won by LOC’s Averon Langley.
U12 girls (20-meter jump): Celia Osborn third and Grace Weinstein fifth for Ford Sayre.
U12 boys (20-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Sebastian Perdrezet third and Boyd Schaefer seventh. Benton Smith leads LOC with a 10th-place result.
U14 girls (20-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Morgan Summerton fourth.
U14 boys (20-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Eli Mansure third.
U14 boys (32-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Schuyler Clapp wins, with Angelo Goodwin second, Sebastian Perdrezet fourth and Blake Pekala ninth.
Open boys (32-meter jump): Ford Sayre’s Cameron Forbush wins, with Eli Mansur second.
LEBANON — Ford Sayre’s Cameron Forbush and Schuyler Clapp took the top two spots in their division at the Lebanon Outing Club’s Junior National qualifier ski jump meet at Storrs Hill on Sunday.
Forbush won the U16 class, with Clapp one spot behind. Ford Sayre’s Teddy Ruth took fourth in the U20 division. All three are hoping to represent the East at Junior Nationals this March in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
FSSC’s Sebastian Perdrezet went off Storrs Hill’s 50-meter ramp for the first time on Sunday, eventually placing eighth in the U14 class.
NEWBURY, N.H. — Ford Sayre’s Maggie Higgins recorded a two-run time of 1 minute, 29.03 seconds to win Sunday’s Bob Skinner Cup girls U14 giant slalom at Mount Sunapee. FSSC’s Hailey Pastel took fourth place (1:32.33). Teammates Dahlia Fuld (1:32.61), Campbell Madden (1:34.30) and Mackenzie Loughman (1:34.36) followed in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
Allie Vogelien had the top finish for Ford Sayre in the girls U12 division, finishing second (1:30.28) behind Mount Sunapee’s Samantha Berg (1:29.42). Kait Christensen was fifth, Lila Muirhead seventh, Nora Holmes eighth and Cassidy Loughman ninth for Ford Sayre, while Harper Traendly narrowly missed the top 10 by less than a second, placing 11th.
Abe Musty led six teammates into the top 11 of the boys U12 racing by finishing second (1:29.75) to Mount Sunapee’s Samuel Waryas (1:28.95). Hayden Clapp (fourth), Ben Ames (fifth), Ely Steffen (seventh), Sumner Finley (10th) and Alexander Muirhead (11th) followed.
Ty Christensen (fifth), Andrew McGuire (sixth) and Wynn Bushell (eighth) recorded Ford Sayre’s top results among U14 boys.
HANOVER — After a putting up with a series of postponements, Ford Sayre Academy ski racers hit the slopes with a vengeance over the past week and change.
Among the highlights:
■Anna Testorf won the first of a two-race super-G at Attitash on Jan. 21, with teammates Eva Schiffman and Molly Hacket in third and fourth, respectively. Schiffman, Testorf and Hackett went 2-3-4 in the second race. FSA’s Ethan Ross placed third and sixth in his races.
■Back at Attitash 24 hours later, Schiffman and Testorf joined FSA’s Lucy Doyle in a 5-6-7 super-G finish in the first of two races. Testorf, Schiffman and teammate Meredith Olenec were 8-9-10 in the second event. Ross placed third and second, respectively, among the boys.
■ More super-G action followed on Jan. 23 at Attitash. Testorf shared seventh and claimed solid fourth in her starts. FSA’s Jack Ross and Ethan Munson were 10-11 in the opening boys race, to which Ross added a ninth place in his second start.
■FSA racers headed to Mittersill on Saturday for a Macomber Cup giant slalom. Schiffman led Ford Sayre athletes by clocking a two-run time of 2:28.79 for fourth place. Ethan Ross was seventh (1:31.01) in the boys race, which was cut to one run by high winds.
■The busy slate ended on Sunday with a Macomber Cup slalom at Pats Peak. Siena Curtis led FSA’s girls with an eighth-place result (1:45.15).
WEST LEBANON — The Hanover 14U girls won all three of their games last weekend.
On Saturday, the Wild rallied from two 1-0 deficits for a pair of 3-1 wins over the Vermont Dynamo. Gwyn McGee, Jessie Nunan and Mauren Ladzinski scored in the opening win, with Sophie Trombley, Svia Russman-Araya and Rory Seeling netting in the nightcap.
Hanover beat Seacoast, 2-1, in Sunday’s physical matchup. Hannah Gubbins and Maeve Lee scored, with Kassidy Haley, Nunan and Molly Sites earning assists.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Patriots may be out of the running for the S uper Bowl, but runners will be warming up for the game on Sunday by taking part in the seventh RedZone 5K run and walk at the Dothan Brook School.
Participants will follow an out-and-back route from the school to Wilder and back. All are encouraged to wear their favorite football attire, with awards to category winners in all age groups. The RedZone 5K is a family-, stroller- and pet-friendly.
The race starts at 10:30 a.m. Advance registration (via runreg.com) is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 14 and under. Day-of-race registration is $20. Proceeds from the race benefit the department’s scholarship program.

HANOVER — In conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Dartmouth athletics will hold its sixth girls sports clinic on Feb. 22 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Leverone Field House.
The clinic is open to girls from kindergarten through eighth grade and will provide participants with the chance to learn skills in a variety of sports, with Big Green athletes serving as instructors. On-site registration is free and begins at 1 p.m.
Each participant will receive a Dartmouth water bottle, a ticket to the Big Green’s Senior Day women’s hockey game with Clarkson later that afternoon and a ticket to the Feb. 29 Dartmouth-Columbia women’s basketball game.

Karp’s seeking teams
LEBANON — The 41st Karp’s Klassic youth and adult basketball tournament at the Carter Community Building Association is seeking teams for March’s event.
The youth tourney runs from March 5-21, with the adult divisions following on March 22-28. The youth tournament is divided grades 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 for boys and girls. There is a two-game guarantee for all teams entered in either youth or adult play.
The cost to enter is $125 for youth and town teams and $175 for adults. The entry deadline is Feb. 12, and entry fees are nonrefundable.
All games will be held at the CCBA’s Witherell Recreation Center, and proceeds go toward the CCBA’s youth programs and scholarships. QUECHEE — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department still has vacancies for two ice fishing clinics in the near future.
Both clinics will take place at Dewey’s Pond in Quechee. The first, on Saturday, runs from 8:30 a.m.-noon and will be held in conjunction with the department’s annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby. The other clinic is on Feb. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon. The clinics are family-oriented: Adults must bring a child, and any children be accompanied by an adult. All participants will get to learn the basics of ice fishing, including ice safety and how to accurately determine ice thickness.

QUECHEE — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby on Dewey’s Pond on Saturday.
The 19th edition of this popular annual event will see children placed in age-appropriate divisions based on the number of participants. From there, youths will hit the ice to earn prizes for their catches.
Food, refreshments, fishing holes, bait and a limited amount of equipment will be provided. Pre-registration is highly encouraged through hartfordvt.myrec.com or by calling 802-295-5036. Day-of registration is available at the welcome tent. Should weather intervene, the makeup date will be Feb. 8.
ON THE SNOW
LEBANON — With winter here, it won’t be long until Lebanon Rec hits the Alice Peck Day trails for a series of snowshoe hikes.
The treks are slated for Feb. 7, 14 and 21, each going from 10 a.m.-noon. Hikers will meet at the APD trailhead. Participants should dress for the conditions and include snacks, water and any other equipment required, including snowshoes or Yak-traks.

FAIRLEE — The Upper Valley Trails Alliance has rescheduled its annual UVTA Skate-a-thon for Feb. 16 on the Lake Morey Skating Trail.
The skate goes from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on the lake’s 4.5-mile loop route. The entry fee gets participants free Nordic skate rentals (on a limited, first-come-first-served basis), hot chocolate, soup, lunch from Boloco and raffle tickets for prizes. Skaters can earn an additional raffle ticket for each lap they complete.
Tickets are available online through UVTA’s website, www.uvtrails.org, and they can also be purchased at the Lake Morey Resort on the day of the event. Students get to join for free if they present their UVTA Passport to Winter Fun upon arrival
