BENNINGTON, N.H. — In spite of soggy conditions on the mountain, Ford Sayre Ski Council racers accounted for one win and a slew of top finishes during Saturday’s John Eneguess Memorial giant slalom at Crotched Mountain.
Ford Sayre picked up a victory in the U12 boys division GS when Abe Musty outpaced the competion by more than a second. Musty’s two-run time of 1 minute, 31.56 seconds led a 1-4-6-9 finish for the club, with Ben Ames fourth (1:37.02), Hayden Clapp sixth (1:37.68) and Ely Steffen ninth (1:45.87).
Ford Sayre also packed the results in the U14 boys division, a race won by Loon Mountain’s Christo Velikin in 1:25.94. The next six spots belonged to FSSC in the form of Nicholas Reiss (1:28.43), Zachary Tracy (1:28.54), Sam Ames (1:29.74), Schuyler Clapp (1:30.13), Andrew McGuire (1:31.07) and Gavin Munson (1:32.29). Charles Forbush rounded out Ford Sayre top-10s by placing ninth (1:33.56).
The club’s U12 girls enjoyed a 4-7-9 result in their race courtesy of Sofie Tomlinson-Sanchez (1:43.19), Nora Holmes (1:45.32) and Lila Muirhead (1:49.05). Ford Sayre’s U14 girls had top-10 performanes from Maggie Higgins (third, 1:31.17) and Campbell White (10th, 1:39.14).
QUECHEE — Although one date set for next week is full, the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department still has vacancies for two more ice fishing clinics scheduled for next month.
Both clinics with open slots will take place at Dewey’s Pond in Quechee. The first, on Feb. 1, runs from 8:30 a.m.-noon and will be held in conjunction with the department’s annual Ice Fishing Derby. The other clinic is on Feb. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon. The clinics are family-oriented: Adults must bring a child, and any children be accompanied by an adult. All participants will get to learn the basics of ice fishing, including ice safety and how to accurately determine ice thickness.
All equipment is provided, and there is no charge to participate. Pre-registration is required, however, through hartfordvt.myrec.com or by calling 802-295-5036.
QUECHEE — The Hartford Parks and Recreation Department will hold its annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby on Dewey’s Pond on Feb. 1.
The 19th edition of this popular annual event will see children placed in age-appropriate divisions based on the number of participants. From there, youths will hit the ice to earn prizes for their catches.
Food, refreshments, fishing holes, bait and a limited amount of equipment will be provided. Pre-registration is highly encouraged through hartfordvt.myrec.com or by calling 802-295-5036. Day-of registration is available at the welcome tent. Should weather intervene, the makeup date will be Feb. 8.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Patriots may be out of the running for the Super Bowl, but runners will be warming up for the game by taking part in the seventh RedZone 5K run and walk at the Dothan Brook School.
Participants will follow an out-and-back route from the school to Wilder and back. All are encouraged to wear their favorite football attire, with awards to category winners in all age groups. The RedZone 5K is a family-, stroller- and pet-friendly.
The race starts at 10:30 a.m. Advance registration (via runreg.com) is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 14 and under. Day-of-race registration is $20. Proceeds from the race benefit the department’s scholarship program.

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will conduct a clinic for people interested in refereeing high school lacrosse on Jan. 19 at Hartford High School.
The session, which runs from 8:30 a.m.-noon, is the first of a two-part process that will include on-field work on March. Rulebooks and classroom training will be provided at the Hartford meeting.

AUBURN, Maine — The Hanover Squirt Green did a five-game, two-day tour of Maine over the weekend, coming away with a 3-1-1 record.
The Wild started Saturday with 16-0 and 11-0 wins over the Maine Gladiators. Bryson Tucker, Reed Oberting, Pavel Milone, Jake Rotchford and Lucia Peraza all scored multiple tallies in the wins, with Charlie Ferland, Conor Fox, Jonny Woolsey and Katharine Moseley also scoring. Hanover closed out a busy opening day with a 2-0 loss to the Maine Moose in Camden.
After a night’s rest, the Wild was at it again with a 2-1 bounce-back win over the Moose. Peraza finished an Oberting give-and-go feed and Paco Souther converted a breakaway feed from Rotchford for Hanover’s goals.
The Wild closed its tour in a 3-3 tie with Casco Bay in Falmouth. Oberting, Milone and Rotchford provided the offense, the latter’s goal coming late in regulation to force the deadlock.
LEBANON — The Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department has scheduled a pair of Burke Mountain ski trips for youths in grades 5-8.
The trips are scheduled for Jan. 20 and March 20. Participants must have equipment or be prepared to rent it at the mountain. The cost is $5 for transportation along with the cost of a lift ticket. Contact Lebanon Rec at 603-448-5212 for more information.
LEBANON — With winter here, it won’t be long until Lebanon Rec hits the Alice Peck Day trails for a series of snowshoe hikes.
The treks are slated for Feb. 7, 14 and 21, each going from 10 a.m.-noon. Hikers will meet at the APD trailhead. Participants should dress for the conditions and include snacks, water and any other equipment required, including snowshoes or Yak-traks.
Each hike is free of charge and requires a minimum of three people to go forward.
