Here’s a look at Upper Valley residents who competed in collegiate varsity sports this fall:
Western New England was seventh out of eight teams at the Commonwealth Coast Conference meet. Sophomore Ed Bieszczad (Grantham/Lebanon) ran four times this fall, his best outing a 38:52.4 on an 8k course at his school’s invitational. … Bryant (R.I.) University sophomore Bodie Avery (Fairlee) was 63rd out of 89 runners at the Northeast Conference meet, posting 28:52 over 8 kilometers, an improvement of roughly a minute from last year. The Bulldogs were sixth out of 10 teams. … Colby-Sawyer senior Ben Jones (Enfield/Mascoma) was third and classmate and teammate Liam Fleming (Orford/Rivendell) was fourth out of 91 runners at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference meet, which the Chargers won. Jones finished in 27:11 and Fleming in 27:13. … Grinnell (Iowa) College won the 10-team Midwest Conference title with senior Matthew Phipps (Hartford) finishing sixth in 27:38. … New York University was second out of 18 teams at the ECAC Division III championships. Sophomore Malcom Silver Van-Meter (Thetford/Thetford Academy) was 12th out of 115 striders, posting 28:50. … Sophomore Jadon Boudreau (KUA) was 45th out of 97 runners at the Commonwealth Coast Conference championships, posting 30:16 and helping the Fighting Scots finish sixth out of eight teams. … Lewis & Clark (Ore.) University freshman Owen Deffner (Thetford/Thetford Academy) was part of the Pioneers’ third-place finish in the Northwest Conference championship. He finished 23rd out of 74 runners in 26:48. … Johnson State finished ninth out of nine teams at the North Atlantic Conference meet. Sophomore Lawson Oullette (North Thetford/Thetford Academy) was the Badgers’ top finisher, coming in at 44th in 36:21.
Vermont Tech freshman Cassidy Lewis (Strafford/Sharon Academy) won the Yankee Small College Conference meet in 25:13, helping the Knights finish second as a team. She then finished 11th at the USCAA national meet, earning second team All-American honors and Vermont Tech was fifth as a team, the highest any program from the school has ever finished at the national level. … Lyndon State junior Isabelle Tuggle (Norwich/Hanover) finished 36th out of 63 runners in 28:52 at the North Atlantic Conference championships. The Hornets were fourth out of seven teams. … Plymouth State’s women were third at the eight-team Little East Conference championship and junior Leanne Burgess (Bradford/Oxbow) finished 20th out of 86 runners in 20:21. … Denison (Ohio) University was seventh out of eight teams at the North Coast Athletic Conference championship. Sophomore Meagan Balch (East Thetford/Thetford Academy) was 62nd out of 89 runners, crossing the line in 25:33. … St. Lawrence sophomore Sadie Lingelbach-Pierce (Hanover) was 57th at the Liberty League championship, running 25:30 and helping the Saints finish fifth out of nine teams.
Bowdoin was 14-2 with senior defender Elle Brine (Lebanon) starting every game and producing a goal and 10 assists. … Junior forward Loretta Blakeney (Barnard/Woodstock) and freshman goaltender Hope Brown (Lebanon) helped Castleton go 11-8. Blakeney started all of the 17 games in which she played and produced 10 goals and nine assists. Brown started three of the seven games in which she played and posted a 1-2 record, a 2.78 GAA and a .719 save percentage. … The University of New England (12-10) received seven goals and eight assists from senior co-captain Kendra MacDonald (Lebanon), who started every game. … Rivier (N.H.) College was 6-10 with sophomore defender Josie Hastings (West Lebanon/Lebanon) appearing in three games. … Junior defender Anna Parker (Meriden/KUA) started every game for St. Lawrence (6-11) and contributed a goal and an assist. … Hannah Scott (Claremont/Stevens) was a senior forward and Lily D’Anna (Woodstock) a junior forward for Simmons (Mass.) College (8-12). Scott posted two goals and an assist while starting 16 of the 19 games she played and D’Anna started 12 of the 20 contests in which she participated, scoring three times and assisting once. … Roanoke (Va.) College was 12-8 with sophomore forward Hannah Bunten (Lebanon) scoring six times and assisting once during the 20 games in which she played. She started 19 times. … Senior defender Miranda Judd (Lebanon/KUA) competed for Merrimack (2-15), starting every game and producing four assists. … Wesleyan (5-10) received six goals from freshman forward Diana Schwarz (Etna/Hanover), who started 11 of 15 games in which she played. Her twin, Lois, appeared in eight contests as a midfielder. … Framingham (Mass.) State freshman Bella Kondi (Canaan/Mascoma) started every game and had two goals and four assists for the Rams (5-13).
Ithaca (N.Y.) College was 8-3 for a second consecutive year with sophomore offensive lineman Ryan Shippa (Lebanon) appearing in four games. … Maines’s Colby College was 2-7 and is 6-21 the past three years. Sophomore kicker and punter Moises Celaya (Hanover) made 16 of 21 extra-point tries and 5 of 9 field-goal attempts, with a long of 39 yards. He also punted 48 times for a 34.6-yard average and had two tries blocked. Sophomore defensive end Mike Staiger (Hanover) was also on the Mules’ roster. … Also in Maine, Bates (2-7) improved from a winless 2018 and snapped a 17-game losing streak by winning its last two games. Sophomore defensive back Tyler Hamilton (White River Junction/Hartford) played in seven games and made 11 tackles. Junior receiver Parker Smith (Claremont/Stevens) played in eight games and made 11 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns. … Bowdoin (0-9) is 28-87 since posting its last winning season in 2005 and has endured three winless campaigns during the last four years. Senior cornerback Matt Whalen (Hanover) played in seven games and made nine tackles. … Junior tight end Jack Cavallaro (Hanover) saw action in five games and caught one pass for six yards at UNH. The Wildcats (6-5) missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season after having reached them for the previous 15 years. … Nichols (Mass.) College was 6-4 with senior linebacker Chris Lawrence (Newport) making 37 tackles in six games. Junior defensive back Dylan McNamara (Newport) played in eight contests and had 22 tackles and two interceptions. … Castleton was 2-7 and suffered its third losing season in the past four years. The roster included junior defensive back Luc Issa (Woodstock), sophomore offensive lineman Nicholas Stone (Claremont/Stevens), and junior receiver Alex Blaiklock (Woodstock). Issa played in nine games and produced 45 tackles and two interceptions. … Plymouth State’s Ryan Milliken (Lebanon) switched from running back to defensive back this season. The junior played in only one game before being sidelined by injury. … Western New England sophomore tight end Matt Eylander (Grantham/Lebanon) had 10 receptions in nine games for the Bears (9-2). He piled up 156 yards and scored two touchdowns for a team that won its fifth consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs… Maine Maritime was 0-10 and pushed its losing streak to 22 games with freshman Jed Astbury (Barnard/Woodstock) as its primary punter. He kicked 56 times for an average of 31.8 yards.
Middlebury failed to quality for the NESCAC Championship, finishing fifth in the fall qualifier. Sophomore Phin Choukas (Hanover) shot rounds of 74 and 75 to tie for eighth place individually. … Nichols (Mass.) College senior T.J. Barber (Cornish/Lebanon) played six times for Nichols (Mass.) College, his low round a 76 at the Montgomery Cup in Pennsylvania. The Bison were sixth out of 12 teams and Barber tied for 31st place individually at 19-over par for two rounds. … St. Michael’s (Vt.) College finished fourth at the Northeast-10 Conference tournament. Junior Connor Morse (KUA) tied for 36th with a 6-over par 36. He played in all five events for the Purple Knights this fall. … Johnson State finished eighth of nine teams at the North Atlantic championship. Senior Austin Walters (Grantham/Lebanon) shot 84-81 during the event’s two days and tied for 24th place out of 45 competitors. The 6-foot-3 Walters also played for the Badgers’ volleyball team, which finished 1-18 in its inaugural season. He appeared in every match and had 66 kills.
Colby (6-6-3) received three goals from senior midfielder Asa Berolzheimer, who played in 13 games and started 12 of them. … Senior forward Jack Doherty (Meriden/KUA) started 15 of 18 games and had two goals and two assists for UNH (15-2-3). The Wildcats won the America East Conference title for a second consecutive year and lost in the second round of the NCAA playoffs. … Vermont Tech was 1-10-3 and its roster included freshmen defenders Aidan Cudhea (Thetford/Thetford Academy), Keillor Kaplan-James (Hanover), Tait Linehan (Strafford), senior goalkeeper Jonathan Alvin (White River Junction) and junior midfielder Scott Shepherd (Grantham/Lebanon). Cudhea started 11 of the 12 games in which he played and scored once, Kaplan-James started one of the nine contest in which he appeared and Linehan started nine of the 12 games in which he saw action. Alvin started four of six contests in which he manned the net, posting a 4.32 GAA and a .731 save percentage. Shepherd started nine of the 11 games in which he played. … Castleton (6-12) featured junior midfielders Zak Gillette (Whitcomb) and Mason Thompson (Woodstock). Gillette played in 15 games and started 10 times, posting an assist. Thompson appeared in 15 contests and started all but one. … Junior forward Tucker Stenger (Enfield/Mascoma), junior defender Carter Adams (Lebanon) and graduate student and midfielder Chris Morse (Meriden/Lebanon) were part of New England College’s 8-11 campaign. Stenger started every game and contributed four goals and an assist, Adams started seven of nine contests in which he played and Morse started three times while playing in 13 games and scored once. … Babson (14-6-2) won the NEWMAC title and reached the NCAA Division III tournament. The Beavers featured senior forward Alex Crompton (Woodstock, who played in every game and started all but two. He posted eight goals and eight assists. … Johnson State (6-8-1) featured junior forward Collin Campbell (Woodstock) and sophomore defender Arthur Clayton (Lyme/Thetford). Campbell started once while playing in 13 games and had one goal, and Clayton started every game and had a goal. … Curry (Mass.) College was 2-15-1. Junior defender/midfielder Kuda Muhlauri (Meriden/Lebanon/KUA) played in every game, starting all but three and contributing two goals… Senior midfielder and fullback Brendan McGovern (KUA) started every game and had five goals and an assist for Dickinson (Pa.) College (10-8). … Jules Stewart (KUA) was a senior defender for Wheaton (Mass.) College, which finished 9-8-1. He had two goals and two assists while starting every game. … Sophomore midfielder Jake Acker (Norwich/Hanover) started 13 times in 15 games for Bentley (8-9), recording a goal. … Ithaca (14-2-4) received three goals and two assists from sophomore defender Thomas Pierce (KUA), who played in 19 games and started 15 of them. … Union (10-7) featured sophomore defender Henry Kahl (Hanover), who appeared in 10 games. … Clarkson (N.Y.) University was 11-5-4 with sophomore defender Sam Pych (Hanover) starting three of the 11 games in which he appeared. The Golden Knights also featured first-year assistant coach Chris Harwick, a former Hanover player. … Sophomore defender Kezar Berger (Strafford/Hanover) was part of a 3-7-2 campaign for NAIA member Warren Wilson (N.C.) College. Berger started five of nine contests in which he appeared, scoring once and adding two assists. … Senior midfielder Connor Higgins (KUA) started nine of the 11 games in which he played for St. Lawrence (6-8-1). … Sophomore midfielder Mitchell Paquette (Claremont/Stevens) started twice and played 19 times for Colby-Sawyer (6-10-3). Junior forward Ethan Sweet (Cornish/Stevens) started 10 of the 14 contests in which he saw action and contributed two goals and an assist.
Freshman defender McKenzie Sauer (Windsor) appeared in one game for Rivier (2-14-2). … St. Michael’s (6-9-2) featured senior forward Maddie Morse (Brownsville/Windsor), who started eight of the 16 games in which she played and scored once. … Sophomore forward Maddie Austin (Sunapee) appeared in four games for Southern New Hampshire (10-6-2). … Senior forward Kelly Brigham (Norwich/Hanover) appeared in 14 games and started four of them at Connecticut College (10-5-1). She had one assist. … Plymouth State (8-10) featured junior forward Mallory Lloyd (Hartland/Sharon Academy) and senior midfielder Hannah Hubert (Newport). Lloyd played in 17 games and started all but one, posting a team-high 11 goals and eight assists. Endicott (Mass.) College women’s volleyball was 23-8 and won the Commonwealth Coast Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament. Junior middle blocker Meghan Frederick (Sunapee) played in 29 matches and produced 93 kills. … Williams (Mass.) College junior rower Katrina Wheelan (Hanover) was part of the Ephs’ first varsity boat at the Head of the Fish event in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in late October. Their craft finished fourth in 11:41.6. … Andrew Wilson (Grantham/Lebanon), a junior rower at Ithaca, was part of the Bombers’ first-flight eight-man boat at the Cornell Autumn Classic. It finished third in the 3K race in 9:14.25 before posting 56.75 in the 300-meter sprint. … Norwich University’s men’s rugby team qualified for the USA Rugby Division II semifinals with a roster including sophomore hooker Cole Petrescu-Bobuc (Grantham/KUA)… Colby-Sawyer’s equestrian team included senior Sophia Sorci (Lebanon), who was the Reserve High Point rider during the Chargers’ final weekend of action. She claimed second in intermediate flat and intermediate fences. Sophomore Molly Clough (North Haverhill/Woodsville) was fifth in novice flat. … Senior middle hitter Aquiles Mercano (Lebanon) appeared in 10 matches for Colby-Sawyer’s first-year volleyball program.
