CAVENDISH, Vt. — A Windsor man who allegedly fired at deer from his truck and then tried to flee from game wardens in a chase pleaded not guilty this week.
Robert Hagar, 48, appeared in Windsor Superior Court on Monday on charges of attempting to elude police, shooting from a public highway, taking big game in closed season, and being a felon in possession of a firearm following the incident over the weekend.
Vermont state game wardens found Hagar shooting at deer from the cab of his truck after legal shooting hours on Saturday, according to a news release from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. When they tried to stop him, Hagar fled, driving 3 miles to a house in Weathersfield before wardens caught up with him and took him into custody, the release said.
The Fish and Wildlife violations each carry a 60-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. The firearm possession charge carries a two-year prison sentence, and the attempt to elude charge, a felony, carries a five-year sentence, according to the release.
Hagar’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 21.
