BRADENTON, FL — Dr. Cornelius J. Cornell Jr. June 22, 1940 – October 30, 2019
Neil Cornell, 79, died on October 30th in Sarasota, Florida. He was born June 22, 1940 in Orange, New Jersey to Cornelius and Helen (Lawrence) Cornell.
Neil attended Garden City High School, Long Island, NY, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from New York Medical College New York, NY in 1966, and completed his internship at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Michigan.
Neil was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy serving in Vietnam as a Flight Surgeon to the First Marine Air Wing, USN Support Hospital. After discharged he finished his residency in Medicine and fellowship in Hematology and Oncology in 1975 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
While at Dartmouth he was a member of the Section of Hematology and Oncology, serving as Chairman from 1984-1994. In 1977 he became Medical Director and founder of the DHMC Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center until his retirement. He was Director of Pediatrics Hematology and Oncology program from 1979 to 1991. He was appointed Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in 1986.
Neil is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda (Banker) Cornell, and his daughter Leslie Cornell Anders, her husband Chris Anders, their daughters Cambelle and Holland of Sarasota, FL. Son David Cornell, his wife Caitlin and sons Hunter, Preston and Grady, daughters Klosie and Cassidy of New Hampshire. Brother, Ted Cornell, sister in-law Zandra and their children Ted and Brittany and many nephews and nieces.
His greatest joys were his family and caring for his patients.
There will be a celebration of his life on January 5th 2020 at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, 40 College Street, Hanover, NH at 2:00 pm and a reception to follow at Hanover Inn, 2 E. Wheelock Street, Hanover NH.
