CORNISH — In anticipation of heavy rain and winds Thursday evening, some towns in the Upper Valley are postponing their scheduled Halloween events.
Cornish announced plans to push trick-or-treating back to Friday evening, and Lyme rescheduled its “Halloween at Lyme Library” event for 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to statements from organizers in both towns. Earlier this week, Enfield announced that trick-or-treating is rescheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Rain is expected to start in the Upper Valley on Wednesday night and last throughout the day and evening Thursday, with wind gusts as high as 25 mph Thursday evening.
“It did not make sense to have all the kids go out and get soaked when they should be having fun,” Colleen O’Neill of Cornish Connect wrote in an email to residents Wednesday.
Festivities will continue as scheduled on Thursday in Norwich, the town said, but Norwich Recreation and the Norwich Inn are moving their opening celebrations indoors to Tracy Hall.
Hartford officials released a statement on their Facebook page saying that they don’t have the ability to keep anyone from participating in trick-or-treat events, but that they will increase patrol efforts Thursday night in the interest of safety.
“We encourage adults and children to exercise common sense and good judgment in light of the pending weather forecast,” the Hartford post said.
