CHARLESTOWN, NH — Herbert G. Leavitt passed away on October 15, 2019, at home with his wife Patsy (Scott) Leavitt at his side. He was born to Herbert and Georgia Leavitt on July 12, 1928, in Newport, N.H. In 1947 he graduated from Newport High School. Herbert worked in the used furniture business his father ran and later worked at the Brampton and Dorr Woolen Mills. After a back injury he did other jobs, like driving for Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H.
Herbert always had a love for arts, crafts and music. He worked in ceramics, did many scenic oil paintings, and made a variety of woodcrafts, including realistic doll houses and forts. His real passion, though, was music. He grew up playing piano, guitar, accordian, and harmonica and later the organ. His great joy was volunteering to uplift others with his piano/organ playing at community centers, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living places. He also played for tenants wherever he lived, which they enjoyed.
Herbert is survived by his wife Patsy and four of five children: Burt and his wife Michiyo (VA), Tim (ME), Louise Leavitt (MA) and Diana Goodson (AZ), as well as a great-grandchild, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His son Gordon (NH) predeceased him. Herbert was also predeceased by his parents; brothers Albert, Merton and Walter; and sister Dorothy Hamel. Herbert is also survived by his brother Arthur and sister Margaret Quigley.
A celebration of Herb’s life will be held at the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center, 152 South St., Claremont, NH 03743, on Dec. 1, 2019, from 2 to 5 p.m. For those who would like to attend, please RSVP to 603-287-1238 by November 15, 2019.
