HANOVER — The Lebanon High field hockey team knocked off arch-rival Hanover on Monday, prevailing, 2-1, at Merriman-Branch Field.
Sydney Gonyea’s successful penalty stroke into the net’s upper-right corner five minutes after halftime stretched the visitors’ lead to 2-0 during a clash with playoff flavor.
“It’s a turf game under the lights; it’s Hanover. Big rival,” said Lebanon coach Amanda Valliere, whose team is 6-3. “They’re a fantastic team, very well-disciplined. It shows we can play really good field hockey. To get a stroke like that, but then to score that stroke is such a huge part of the game.”
Hanover (7-1-1) mounted a strong comeback, creating six second-half penalty corners. The Marauders’ Hillary Mackall scored into the right side of the goal with nine minutes remaining off a Miranda Galbraith pass.
A penalty corner with 3 minutes, 30 seconds to go resulted in Kate Blaisdell shot slamming off the right post. Blaisdell took another shot from 15 yards as time expired.
Multiple Hanover players battled illness throughout the game, including goaltender Ella Edmonds, who was treated during timeouts. The senior nonetheless kept the hosts in contention with eight saves.
Lebanon’s Molly Smith opened the scoring off a Gonyea cross during the 14th minute. Raiders goaltender Autumn Crowell made 13 saves.
“They outplayed us, especially in the first half,” Hanover coach Jean Essex said. “They were first to every ball. They wanted the win.”
Hanover, an NHIAA Division II team, hosts Hartford on Wednesday. Lebanon, a Division III program, will host Newfound (8-0) on Thursday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Kennedy Mullen scored twice, Daisy Phelps had an assist and Bailey Cameron made nine saves. The Hurricanes (8-1-1), who coach Heather Scudder said received strong performances from Chloe Jensen, Zoe Pfeiffer and Elsie Davis, clash with Hanover on Wednesday.
SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Yellowjackets bounced back from their first loss Friday with goals from Peyton Richardson, Angelina Bigwood, Karen Kapuscinski, Chloe Husser, Linda Ricard and Ashley Grela.
Hussey had two assists and Alyssa Slocum, Alexina Peckinpaugh, Richardson and Bigwood notched single assists. Springfield’s Hannah Presch closed the scoring with two minutes to play and teammate Anna Church made 14 saves. Windsor’s Lindsey Young stopped four shots.
Windsor (7-1-1), which held a 21-4 shot advantage and a 10-3 edge in penalty corners, hosts Burr & Burton on Friday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Nick Jones had four goals and Nehemiah Arnold, Tarin Prior and Jake Mayotte also scored. Tanner Bessette had two assists and Andrew St. Martin, Nolan McMahon and Prior had one each.
Shane Miller and Mykel Fungi each made one save for Hartford (7-2), which led, 4-0, at halftime and hosts Fair Haven on Friday.
QUECHEE — Dylan Patel opened the scoring during the 12th minute but the Eagles trailed, 3-1, at intermission. MVCS (2-5) received four saves from Stan Nelson and visits Trinity Christian in Concord on Tuesday.
BRANDON, Vt. — Jack Simack scored out of a goalmouth scramble with 25 seconds remaining to boost the Wildcats to 3-5.
Paul Metzer and Jacob Barry also scored for the visitors, who received assists from Carder Stratton and Simack. Timber Russell made four saves for WRV, which visits Green Mountain on Tuesday.
NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Dylan Bearce made 13 saves but the Olympians dropped to 0-8 while Northfield improved to 2-6. Oxbow visits Danville on Wednesday.
WHITEFIELD, N.H. — Stella Lavertue scored 30 seconds into overtime off a Tanner Brown pass and the Cardinals improved to 10-0. Stevens is at Kearsarge on Saturday.
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Hanover’s Jack Meehan was the medalist with a 35 and followed by teammates Patrick Daley (37), Natalie Morhun (39), Dylan Jopp (40), Justin Alderdice (42) and Will Cahoon (42).
Morhun recorded a hole-in-one on the 135-yard third hole, using an 8-iron to ace the par-3 layout. The Marauders face Nashua North and Exeter on Wednesday at Green Meadow Country Club in Hudson.
COLCHESTER, Vt. — Woodstock High girls lacrosse coach Amanda Hull was one of six inductees into the St. Michael’s College athletic hall of fame last weekend. The Hartland native and Bethel resident is the 14th member of that Purple Knights program to be so honored.
Hull graduated in 2008 as the St. Mike’s leader in career ground balls, draw control, winning goals and caused turnovers. She was second in goals (136) and third in points (157).
HANOVER — Katie Peterson had 23 digs and five aces but the Marauders fell, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 5-15.
Willa Parkins had five kills and three blocks for Hanover, which visits Wednesday at John Stark.
AKRON, OHIO — Dartmouth College junior Jason Liu shot even par during each of the first two rounds of the Firestone Invitational on Monday, finishing tied for 12th place in the 81-player field. Dartmouth is in 10th place at 19-over. The third round is Tuesday.
