HANOVER — Katie Spanos netted the game winner with 5:43 left in overtime to lead the Big Green field hockey team to a 4-3 win over UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.

The senior team captain’s heroics had already included a game winner in 2019 when she tallied the fifth-period goal at Holy Cross two weeks ago. The game was sent into overtime thanks to Holley Cromwell’s first career goal with 1:17 left in regulation, tying the game up at 3-3.

Carmen Braceras scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season late in the third quarter to cut into the RiverHawks lead. The first goal of the game for the Big Green came in the 19th minute when Tatum Schultz scored her first goal of the season, but they trailed 3-1 at the half.

Dartmouth (3-5, 0-1) now starts a stretch of four-straight road games. The first comes Saturday at Brown.

WOMEN’S GOLFYao stands out

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Big Green climbed three spots in the final standings to finish in a tie for seventh at the Princeton Invitational.

Dartmouth began the day in 10th place and proceeded to shave two strokes off its first-round score while other teams had more difficulty on the par-72, 6,121-yard course.

Freshman Samantha Yao, playing as an individual, aced the par-3, 156-yard 11th hole to help card a 2-over-74 on the day. The ace guided her to a fifth overall finish in the two-round tournament. Kristen Chen led the Big Green with two-straight rounds of 1-over-37 play finishing in a tie for 23rd.

Dartmouth will have a few weeks off until it finishes its fall slate with a trip to the Lady Blue Hen Invitational on the weekend of Oct. 19.

WOMEN’S TENNISGuan, Cable win singles and doubles

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Dartmouth finished play Sunday afternoon at the Bulldog Invitational, beating Brown 7-2 in singles but faltered 1-2 in doubles versus UMass.

Chuyang Guan won her singles match against UMass’ Shiran Arol Wiegand, winning by scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Classmate Catherine Cable also played a Minuteman opponent, Jovana Bogicevic, and won in a clean sweep 6-2, 6-4.

The two teamed up to take down the UMass duo of Jasmin Tripathy and Ashley Avery, 6-4.

The Big Green will play in the ITA Northeast Regional Championship at Army West Point from Oct. 17-22.

Girls Field HockeyStevens 3, Newport 1

CLAREMONT — The Cardinals scored a homecoming weekend win to improve their record to 5-2 on the season.

Bri Frisbee scored two goals and an assist, and Abigail Faro added a goal and assist for Stevens. Abbie Thurber tallied an assist, too.

The Tigers’ lone goal came on a pass from state assist leader Eliza Bates on a free hit that went airborne and landed in front of Lacy McNeel, who buried the shot.

The Cardinals hosts Conant on Wednesday. Newport (5-4) plays Friday against visiting Littleton.
