WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hartford High boys soccer team had given up all of two goals in match action since the start of preseason last month. That made Tuesday’s 5-1 Southern Vermont League loss to Brattleboro a bit perplexing for both the Hurricanes and coach Kevin Guilbault.
Part of it was the Colonels’ excellence. The visitors broke open a 1-1 tie with goals in the 25th, 32nd and 33rd minutes, eventually more than doubling Hartford’s goals against for the season in the span of 80 minutes at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
“I think part of how well we’ve played is we’ve had a good mental approach; they’ve been committed to the defensive end,” Guilbault said. “Through our first six games, we’d only given up two goals, and that goes back to our three scrimmages in the preseason. Here’s a team that’s given up just two goals all fall, and then it gives up four in 40 minutes. I think once they gave up two again, they had a hard time collecting themselves.”
Brattleboro (5-2-0) also showed its quality.
“They scored a couple of really nice goals,” Guilbault noted. “The two they scored 20 seconds apart (late in the first half) were really, really nice. Quality high school goals, struck well and in the corners.”
Brattleboro opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Hartford’s Nick Jones countered a minute later on a pass from Andrew St. Martin before the Colonels took over.
Hartford (5-2-0) visits Otter Valley on Friday.
Hanover 4, Central 3
MANCHESTER — Charlie Adams broke a 2-2 tie — as well as the Marauder program’s career goal-scoring record — with a 50th-minute free kick that sent Hanover (6-1-0) past the squad that knocked it out of the NHIAA D-I semifinals last year.
A wild match saw both teams own and lose one-goal leads in the opening half. Eric Ringer scored his second goal in two games to get Hanover started, Central’s Samuel Assantha and Sam Latona moved the Little Green (5-1-0) ahead and Blake Palmer leveled on an Adams assist in the 33rd for the halftime draw.
Adams drilled home a free kick to break the deadlock early in the half, moving past former Hanover and Dartmouth striker Eric Jayne with his 51st career goal. The Brown-bound Adams added No. 52 eight minutes later by stripping a Central defender and scoring on a breakaway.
Assantha gave the Gill Stadium crowd hope with his second at 69:50. Hanover used key contributions from reserve defenders Brendan Brigham and Noah Pikielny to keep the lead, aided by Joey Perras’ three-save goalkeeping and overall game management.
“This wasn’t revenge; we went in with the understanding that this was a team that beat us, 4-0 (last year),and we wanted to be competitive,” Hanover coach Rob Grabill said. “It’s good to get a result against (Central).”
Hanover hosts Concord on Thursday.
