WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — And both teams are still undefeated.

Hartford, a serious threat to challenge for all the marbles in VPA Division II, and Windsor, a team that has not graduated a player in the last two years and has an eye on the top prize in D-III, played to 2-2 tie in a tense Southern Vermont League field hockey tilt on Saturday at Hartford High School.

Or as Hartford athletic director Jeff Moreno said, “Wow! What a game.”

Ironically, the play on the on field reflected what was on the scoreboard, as Hartford had the first-half push and Windsor the momentum in the second 30 minutes. The seven-on-seven, 10-minute overtime was a wash.

“It was good to play a game like this,” said Windsor coach Jody Wood of her 2-0-1 Yellowjackets. “This will make us a better team.”

Hartford boss Heather Scudder agreed and thought it had a tournament atmosphere. “It really helps to play a good team like Windsor. They have some talented players,” she said.

Hartford is 6-0-1, rolling along with 29 goals through seven games. But more impressive was the defense, which came into the game having allowed just two scores. This from a team that gave up 43 goals last year.

The way the game started, it appeared as if the Hurricanes would roll as they took a 2-0 lead before Windsor scored before the break.

Scudder said both teams made adjustments at halftime, and she thought the Windsor changes might have had an effect on her team’s midfield play, a spot Hartford controlled in the first half.

“We had to do something, because we were awful in the first half,” Wood said.

The game had a myriad of key situations and breakdowns that were saved by goalkeepers Bailey Cameron of Hartford and Glenna Ricard of Windsor. Cameron had eight stops and Ricard seven. While both keepers gave up two goals, they both had outstanding games.

Windsor tied the contest with 19:05 to play in the second half on a penalty stroke that was the result of the Hartford keeper being charged with covering the ball after making a save. Junior Alyssa Slocum took the shot for Windsor, beating Cameron high to the stick side.

“She’s money on those shots,” Wood said.

When asked if she aimed for the high, stick-side corner, she said: “Kinda, at least that’s what I always try to do.”

Hartford took a 1-0 lead at the 23:22 mark of the first period. Kennedy Mullen did the grunt work following a sustained rush, retaining possession as she battled defenders, before Rylee Potwin scored off a carom. It got to be 2-0 five minutes later when Mullen knocked in her own rebound.

Windsor cut the gap to 2-1 before the half on an Angela Bigwood goal.

Next for Hartford is a trip to Mount Anthony on Wednesday, while Windsor will have its fourth consecutive road game on Tuesday, visiting Woodstock.
