KEENE, N.H. — Another bullpen collapse by the Upper Valley Nighthawks resulted in another missed opportunity to gain some ground in the NECBL standings.
Andrew DeRoche (Trinity) and Skylar Pichardo (Marist) let a one-run lead in the seventh inning slip away against the Keene Swamp Bats, as they gave up five runs on three hits, a home run, one walk and an error in a 7-3 loss on Friday night at Alumni Field.
The Nighthawks fell to 12-10 with the loss, losing ground to Keene (13-7) in the NECBL’s Northern Division standings. The Vermont Mountaineers (12-10) fell to the Winnipesaukee Muskrats; Upper Valley next takes on Vermont at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Jordan DiValerio (St. Joseph’s) was again stellar, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in the first six innings. Dan Bolt (Bradley) hit a solo home run in the second inning for the Nighthawks, who took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a Andrew Cossetti (St. Joseph’s) RBI double and a Gehrig Anglin (Wright State) RBI single. Upper Valley headed into the bottom of the inning, with its bullpen taking over for the starter DiValerio.
Then things fell apart. DeRoche gave up a single and a walk before an error by Nighthawks shortstop Adam Smith (UNC-Wilmington) allowed a run to score. Another RBI single gave Keene a lead before DeRoche was pulled after one out. Pichardo later threw a wild pitch that scored a run and a two-run home run over the center field fence by David Bedgood, his second of the night.
Will Carnley (Troy) is scheduled to get the start against the Mountaineers on Saturday morning.
