WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Stevens High’s Derrick Stanhope was named the Granite State’s most valuable player in the 2019 Twin State Baseball Classic on Saturday morning, allowing just two hits over three scoreless innings in the opening game of a doubleheader split between Vermont and New Hampshire at the Maxfield Sports Complex.
Stanhope picked up the victory in the opener for New Hampshire, 4-1; Kyle Pelleter, of Lebanon, retired six of the seven batters he faced for the save in the opener. In Game 2, Cody Grant, of Oxbow, threw two scoreless innings for Vermont in the 11-3 win.
It is the fourth split in the five-year history of the annual All-Star game, which resumed in 2015 after an 11-year hiatus. Vermont had the lone sweep last year, its first at Maxfield.
Otter Valley’s Josh Beayon was named the Green Mountain State’s most valuable player, leading Vermont on the mound to a Game 2 victory and going 2-for-2 with a double in Game 1.
In the opener, Hanover’s Keegan Silovich started things off for New Hampshire with a two-run triple. The Granite State out-hit Vermont by a 8-6 margin.
In the nightcap, Vermont used a 16-hit attack; New Hampshire managed only two singles.
The Classic is likely to return to Maxfield next summer.

The Nighthawks travel to North Adams to face the NECBL-best SteepleCats on Sunday.
