Mountain biking involves more than just flying down the hill, so the Hanover Recreation Department has been busy teaching women the vagaries of the sport in a variety of venues over the past week.

Saturday bought a group to Tenney Field in Hanover for a maneuvers clinic. Participants learned wheel lifts, pedal lifts, pedal wheelies and other skills under the guidance of the departmentโ€™s Liz Burdette and Leah Gardner, both of whom are certified instructors through the Professional Mountain Bike Instructors Association.

The class came midway through a beginnersโ€™ riding series run by the department, with cyclists making trips to area trail networks for rides and work on skills. The series has two rides to go: Wednesday on the Boston Lot trails in Lebanon and Saturday at Kingdom Trails in Burke, Vt.
