QUECHEE — Lebanon’s Pat Pelletier is tied for 12th after play on Tuesday’s first round of the New England Open at Quechee Club’s Highland Course.

Pelletier started his round with back-to-back birdies before returning those strokes to par with back-to-back bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes. A string of pars, broken only by a birdie on 12, left Pelletier with a 1-under par round of 70.

The event was originally scheduled for the Lakeland Course, but the harsh winter and spring weather has rendered Lakeland unfit for championship play at the moment. Instead the competitors took to the undulating Highland Course.

Mark Purrington (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jack Lang (Lexington, Mass.) are tied for the lead with matching scores of 66, 5-under par. Nicholas Pandelena (Atkinson, N.H.) and Brandon Lacasse (Chateauguay, Quebec) are tied for third, one shot behind, after first-round scores of 67.

West Lebanon resident Garth McGee is tied for 27th after a 1-over par round of 72. Former Montcalm Golf Club head professional Cory Mansfield is tied for 34th after an opening 73. Drake Hull, the 2017 Vermont Amateur champion, also shot 73.

Hanover High graduate Sam Brackett shot 75. KUA graduate Evan Russell and Hartford High graduate Zach Temple each shot 77. Hanover High graduate Nate Choukas had a 78.

This marks the 23rd time the Quechee Club has hosted the 36-hole stroke play New England Open, including a run of 19 straight years from 1980-98. This year’s Open concludes on Wednesday.
