HARTFORD VILLAGE — About 50 households have been advised to boil water until further notice after a section of piping had to be replaced because of a water main break on Christian Street on Saturday.

Residents living on several streets in Hartford Village are being asked to boil all water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation in order to kill any bacteria that may be present.

The boil water order is specifically for residents on Christian, Paula and Campbell streets, Truel Road and Ry Kris and Ozzie lanes. No other residents are impacted, according to a boil water advisory posted over the weekend.

Town officials say they are waiting for the results of water samples that were taken on Monday to determine whether total coliform is present. The results are expected Wednesday.

The order stems from a “major water leak” in the area of 249 Christian St., which also caused water damage to a nearby home’s basement.

An alarm alerted officials to a break in the piping around 6 a.m. on Saturday and workers responded to fix it, Hartford Town Manager Brannon Godfrey said on Monday.

Crews replaced 5 feet of 12-inch cast iron water line over the course of several hours. Old piping is likely to blame for the break, Godfrey said.

Crews then patched the road, which remains lined with traffic cones.

The roughly 50 residents who are under the boil water order had service interrupted for a period of time while crews repaired the line. There are no businesses impacted.

The immediate repair cost is estimated at $7,000, plus additional clean up and paving to follow, Godfrey said.

Godfrey said about 261,364 gallons of water, or 6,878 gallons per minute for 38 minutes, were lost.

It took Department of Public Works crews less than 30 minutes to locate the leak and shut off the water around it, he said.

The home that suffered damage is owned by Thomas and Sara Rice, Godfrey said.

Attempts to reach them on Monday were unsuccessful.
