HARTFORD — Massachusetts police this week arrested a Hartford man and a Grantham man after they allegedly tried to exchange several guns that were stolen from a vehicle in Wilder for money or drugs outside a Holyoke, Mass., hotel, authorities said.

Timothy Keith, 32, of White River Junction, and Phillip Damone, 33, of Grantham, are facing “numerous” firearms and ammunition offenses, as well as a charge of possessing narcotics, Massachusetts State Police said in a news release.

Hartford police say the six firearms recovered in Massachusetts matched the ones stolen from a locked vehicle on Hollow Drive in Wilder earlier this week. Seven guns were taken in total and all but one rifle has been recovered, Hartford Police Chief Phil Kasten said on Thursday.

In addition to the firearm thefts, thieves have targeted at least five other vehicles in the Hollow Road and greater Wilder village area since Monday. Those break-ins happened around the same timeframe of the firearms thefts, and loose change, a purse and barber tools also were taken, Hartford police said. No one has been charged with those thefts.

“It does appear that all of the incidents that we are investigating are linked,” Kasten said. “However, it is still too early to tell that.”

Keith and Damone haven’t been charged with theft in Vermont, but “we are continuing to investigate,” Kasten said. “We’ll share that information when we get to that point.”

Wayne Kendall, who lives on Hollow Road, a dead end street off Route 5, said he returned home on Tuesday to find that his vehicle had been broken into and several firearms had been taken. Kendall said he doesn’t know the two men.

Massachusetts State Police said in the release that they “developed information” that the men would be arriving in their state on Monday night with guns to exchange for cash or drugs. When the men pulled in to the parking lot at the hotel driving a vehicle the police thought they would be in, they were arrested.

The men allegedly had hundreds of rounds of ammunition, “large capacity feeding devices” and a substance believed to be heroin, Massachusetts State Police wrote.

Damone and Keith were arraigned on Tuesday in Holyoke District Court. They both were held on cash bail, according to a court clerk.

Although Kendall’s vehicle was locked, several of the others that were targeted weren’t. Hartford police are urging all residents to roll up their windows, lock their doors and remove valuables from their vehicles.

Anyone who notices a suspicious vehicle in the area should alert authorities. Residents also should call police if they have information about the latest incidents, or if they haven’t made a report about a theft.
