SOUTH ROYALTON — The White River Valley baseball team continued its torrid start to the 2019 season with another dominant showing on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats bludgeoned visiting Arlington, winning 20-0 in five innings to improve to 3-0.

White River Valley had contributions up and down the lineup, with Carder Stratton setting the pace with a single, an RBI and four runs scored. George Carr was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Zeb Perrault added two hits while scoring twice. Jake Hewitt doubled and finished with three runs. Donovan Forcier had a RBI single, and Dominic Craven scored twice.

The Wildcats are stocked with plenty of experience from the former South Royalton baseball team, which reached the VPA Division IV state championship game a season ago.

That same core group of players, along with some additional players from the former Whitcomb-Rochester team, is now serving notice of its intentions with a quick start in Division III this season.

Timber Russell threw 65 pitches over four innings of work for the Wildcats, allowing three hits and striking out four. Craven struck out two in an inning of relief work.

“Timber had a very strong outing for us today,” WRV coach Devin Cilley said.

The Wildcats will host a doubleheader with Twinfield on Saturday.

Woodsville 14, Lisbon 2 (5)

WOODSVILLE — The Engineers (4-0) kept it rolling with a five-inning win over the Panthers.

Stephen Aldrich led the offensive onslaught, slugging a grand slam on his way to five RBIs. Calvin Roy was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Zach Moore was 3-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Patrick Reardon-Estes struck out eight in three innings of work. Roy pitched the final two innings. The Engineers are back in action on Thursday at Littleton.

Stevens 10, Fall Mountain 0 (6)

CLAREMONT — Derrick Stanhope needed just 67 pitches to toss a four-hitter for the Cardinals (2-2).

Stanhope struck out seven while walking one. Cam Macia paced the Stevens attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Owen Taylor had a triple, scored twice and drove in one. Trey Theriault and Tyler Bonneau each had a hit and two runs. Jarrett LaPointe added an RBI single in the sixth to help close out the win.

The Cardinals will host ConVal on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Pittsfield 11, Sunapee 1 (6)

PITTSFIELD, N.H. — The Panthers jumped on Sunapee starting pitcher Quinn Fair for a six-run second inning to hand the Lakers (3-1) their first defeat of the season.

“He could only throw a flat fastball,” Sunapee coach Tom Frederick said. “They just sat on it and crushed it.”

Matt Nangeroni was 2-for-3 and drove in Sean Shisko in the third inning for Sunapee’s only run. Darren Hulton had a fine defensive day behind the plate for the Lakers, throwing out two Pittsfield baserunners trying to steal second base as well as a third attempting to swipe third.

Sunapee visits Concord Christian on Thursday.

Merrimack Valley 7, Hanover 3

PENACOOK, N.H. — The Marauders fell to 0-2 with a loss at the Pride.

Joey Perras pitched the first five innings, allowing five unearned runs while striking out four. Ian Hedgepeth pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits.

Kegan Silovich had a double and was hit by a pitch for Hanover. Jack Loftus singled, was also hit by a pitch, stole two bases and drove in two. The Marauders scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Hanover will visit Pelham on Friday before a showdown at Lebanon on Monday.

Softball Woodsville 12, Lisbon 0 (5)

WOODSVILLE — McKenzie Dennis and Mackenzie Kingsbury combined to throw a no-hitter for the Engineers (3-1).

Dennis went the first four innings, striking out three. Kingsbury added a pair of strikeouts in the fifth inning to close out the no-no. Kingsbury helped the cause at the plate, going 2-for-2.

Emily Prest was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs. Leah Krull had two hits, scored twice and drove in one. Emily Farr was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

The teams will have a rematch on Monday, this time in Lisbon.

Sunapee 16, Pittsfield 14

PITTSFIELD, N.H. — The Lakers scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to turn a three-run deficit into a two-run lead.

Ellie Frederick started in the circle and went the first three innings before returning for the final two innings to close out the win. Frederick recorded 13 strikeouts in total, including six straight in the final two frames. Natalie Austin pitched two innings, striking out five.

Miah Hamm had a key hit in the sixth for the Lakers, a two-run single. Kathryn Hastings added a RBI single in the sixth and was 3-for-5 on the day. Frederick was 2-for-4 with a double and scored four runs.

Sunapee (2-2) visits Newport on Monday.

Stevens 14, Fall Mountain 2

CLAREMONT — Madison Lapsley enjoyed 17 hits’ worth of support and tossed a four-hitter over six innings as the Cardinals (2-3) rolled at Veterans Field.

Lapsley struck out six and walked three to get the victory. Jenna Pond and Ellee Grenier led the assault with three hits each. Lapsley helped her own cause with two hits, matching Ashlyn Marsh, Tanner Brown and Maddie Ferland. Zoey Foote, Makayla Maccioli and Brown all had strong plays on defense as well.

The Cards are back under the lights on Friday night, entertaining ConVal.

PENACOOK, N.H. — The Marauders scored three runs in the top of the first inning to build an early lead against the Pride.

Bri Elder, Bella Bardales, Katrina Randall and Olivia Peterson all had singles for Hanover. The Marauders (0-2) will visit Pelham on Friday.

WEST CANAAN — The Royals fell to 1-4 after a five-inning loss to the visiting Mountaineers.

Boys Lacrosse Kimball Union 9, Tilton 5

TILTON, N.H. — Griffin Hatley and Jack Bolg combined to win 16 of 18 faceoffs to key the Wildcats in a win at Tilton.

Hatley added two goals. KUA (6-3) will host Holderness on Saturday.

Mount Mansfield 13, Hartford 5

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The VPA Division II Hurricanes weren’t able to keep pace with the D-I Cougars.

Reece Thompson had two goals and an assist to pace Hartford. Dawson and Carter Nalette each had a goal and one assist. Logan Raymond added a goal. Goalie Tarin Prior made seven saves.

The Canes visit Montpelier on Friday.

Girls Lacrosse Woodstock 12Green Mountain Valley 10

WAITSFIELD, Vt. — Gina Sorrentino had four goals to help the Wasps (2-2) hold on for the win.

Woodstock led, 7-3, at halftime before seeing its lead drop to just one goal midway through the second half. Goalie Kai Albers (11 saves) and the Wasps defense did enough to help preserve the lead in the end.

Sophie Legget added three goals for Woodstock. Addie Gray and Kelly Gebhardt each had two goals. Sidney Pilot had a goal and two assists.

The Wasps visit Burr & Burton on Friday.

Brattleboro 15, Hartford 4

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — The Hurricanes (2-3) stayed with the Colonels early on only to have the home team got on a long scoring stretch to take control.

Carolyn North and Zoe Pfeiffer had first-half goals to keep the Canes within 3-2 midway through the opening half. Harwood visits Hartford on Saturday.

Boys Tennis Lebanon 7, Bow 2

LEBANON — The Raiders improved to 2-1 with a strong showing against the Falcons, last year’s NHIAA Division III state champs.

Mason Arado won, 8-6, at No. 1 singles for Lebanon. Seamus Hickey (8-5), Nate Magari (8-3), Tyler St. Martin (8-1) and Roneet Arora (8-6) also won in singles. Arado and Hickey won, 8-3, in doubles. Magari and Martin added an 8-5 win.

Starting on Monday at Coe-Brown, Lebanon faces a stretch of five matches over five consecutive days.

Rutland 5, Woodstock 2

RUTLAND — The Wasps (0-2) won a pair of doubles matches and lost three singles matches in tiebreakers.

Henry Greene and Danny Drebber won a thriller at No. 1 doubles, 7-6, 3-6, 10-7. The freshmen duo of Cooper Dorsogna and Ian Goldberg, each making their varsity debut, added a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 win.

The Wasps will visit Stowe on Friday.

Girls Tennis North Country 4, Hartford 1

NEWPORT, Vt. — The Hurricanes fell just short in a rain-shortened match at North Country.

Phelan O’Keefe was dominant at No. 1 singles for Hartford, winning 6-0, 6-0. The two teams will match up again on Monday, this time at home for the Canes.

College Skiing Dartmouth Team Awards

HANOVER — The Dartmouth ski team gathered for its end of year banquet and dished out its annual team awards while also naming captains for the 2019-20 season.

The Martha Rockwell Award, given to the top skiers from the women’s team, went to Alexa Dlouhy and Stephanie Currie (who split the Alpine award) and Katharine Ogden (Nordic). The Norwegian Trophy, for the top skiers on the men’s team, went to Tanguy Nef and Drew Duffy (splitting the Alpine award) and Callan Deline (Nordic).

Other awards handed out at the banquet:

Earle Jette Award (most improved skiers): Men’s Alpine, Jimmy Krupka; men’s Nordic, Koby Gordon; women’s Alpine, Ellie Curtis; women’s Nordic, Leah Brams.

Pam Merrill Award (best first-year women’s skier): Tricia Mangan (Alpine) and Molly Gellert (Nordic).

Cooke Award (best first-year men’s skier): Jimmy Krupka (Alpine) and Luc Golin (Nordic).

Torin Tucker Award: Mikaela O’Brien and Fedor Myagkov.

The Maggie Cup: Spencer Brown, Dartmouth’s director of strength and conditioning.

Spirit of Skiing Award: Tricia Mangan and Lydia Blanchet.

College Baseball Dartmouth 6, Siena 4

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — Nate Ostmo homered and drove in three runs to lead the Big Green over Siena.

Alex Vaules (2-2) got the win for Dartmouth, tossing the first five innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk. Four different Big Green relievers combined to blank Siena over the final four innings, including a strong effort from Jonah Jenkins in the bottom of the ninth. Jenkins stranded runners on second and third to earn his first collegiate save.

Ostmo gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Ostmo added a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the Big Green in front, 5-3. Ben Rice added a RBI single and Blake Crossing had a RBI sacrifice fly for Dartmouth. Matt Feinstein ripped a solo home run in the fifth inning to account for the final Dartmouth tally.

The Big Green (13-21 overall, 6-9 Ivy) will host Yale for a three-game series this weekend.

Skinner Honored

HANOVER — Dartmouth pitcher Nathan Skinner was named Ivy League rookie of the week for the second time this season.

Skinner pitched the first six innings of Dartmouth’s 15-7 win over Harvard on Sunday, departing with a 14-2 lead before the Crimson added runs against relief pitchers to tighten the score. The win was huge for Dartmouth, which had lost the first two games of the series to Harvard.

Castleton 7, Colby-Sawyer 4

NEW LONDON — The Chargers (6-24) lost in a nonconference game to the visiting Spartans.

Brendan Barrett had two hits and scored two runs for Colby-Sawyer. Danny McCrystal was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Alec Burns and Austin Butler each went 2-for-4. Charlie Danaher drove in a pair.

The Chargers will host NVU-Lyndon on Thursday.

College Hockey Lassonde named to U.S. staff

HANOVER — USA Hockey announced that Dartmouth men’s hockey associate head coach David Lassonde will be on the American coaching staff for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championships in Trinec, Czech Republic.

Lassonde was an assistant coach on the 2019 team as well, helping to guide Team USA to a silver medal. Lassonde was also a part of the coaching staff of the gold medal winning team at the 2017 World Deaf Ice Hockey Championship and the US Under-18 Select Team’s silver medal performance at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place from Dec. 26, 2019 through Jan. 5, 2020.

Women’s Lacrosse New England College 21Colby-Sawyer 11

HENNIKER, N.H. — Grace Vosburgh led the Chargers (10-6) with four goals in a loss at the Pilgrims.

Brittany Ireland, Allison Piracini and Bethany Fennessey each had seven ground balls for Colby-Sawyer. Sierra Schuster forced four turnovers. Goaltender Kailyn Lapham made 15 saves for the Chargers.

COLLEGE Commitments Lebanon’s Fleuryto Endicott College

WEST LEBANON — Michael Fleury, a former Lebanon High football and lacrosse competitor, has committed to play those sports at Endicott College, according to a Wednesday social media post by his father, Jeff.

Michael Fleury played for the Raiders as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to boarding school at New Hampton, where he’s currently a senior.

Michael Fleury represented the U.S. in U17 football competition during the summer of 2016, competing for the Americans against a squad from Ontario at AT&T Stadium in Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. He was the only New England player out of 59 chosen.

Endicott, an NCAA Division III school in Beverly, Mass., was 7-4 in football last fall, posting its first winning record since 2011. Endicott men’s lacrosse is currently 8-7 overall and 6-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, which it won in 2017.
