HANOVER — The Hanover Consumer Cooperative Society on Thursday said it plans to phase out the use of plastic bags at its cash registers over the next 12 months.

“We know there are a variety of opinions on this matter, but as a cooperative, one thing can agree on is that we need to reduce our dependency on plastics and this is another step, of many, for our cooperative,” Co-op general manager Ed Fox said in a news release.

The Co-op has nearly 2 million customer transactions a year at its four stores, and said it has been working for more than 30 years on programs and incentives to promote reusable bags.

The move comes as the New Hampshire Legislature is considering legislation regarding plastic bags and groups in the Upper Valley are also campaigning against their use.
