HANOVER — The Hanover Parks and Recreation Department is helping to spread warmth and comfort by hosting a monthly no-sew blanket workshop, where participants can help make blankets to be donated to Upper Valley organizations that serve people in need.
The next blanket workshop will take place from 1:15-3:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the R.W. Black Community Center, 48 Lebanon St., Hanover. The workshop takes place on the first Wednesday of each month, following the Parks and Recreation department’s monthly birthday celebration luncheon.
“I think this project is important because we provide comfort and support to people who are sick, lonely, or experiencing their last days on earth,” said Jodi Lenning, who leads the blanket-making workshop.
“It seems hard to believe that a blanket can provide comfort; however, the blanket is soft, made of a variety of colors and designs meant to appeal to different tastes, hobbies, and interests, all of which might provide comfort to a patient,” she said. “Often, when people are sick or lonely we just want to curl up in a blanket and read a book, watch a movie or sleep.”
All the workshops are free and all materials are provided. Lenning said the workshops are a great way to help others while socializing and creating.
“This provides a comfortable venue for those of us who are not outgoing but also those who really like to chat,” she said.
One of the organizations that receives the donated blankets is Good Beginnings of the Upper Valley, which supports parents of infants.
“We are very happy to be part of this mission,” Lenning said.
