SUNAPEE — A 25-year-old Sunapee man was arrested on a reckless conduct charge after a nearly nine-hour standoff at his home on Saturday that ended after a state police SWAT team used tear gas to help take him into custody.
Sunapee officers went to 120 Lower Main St. in Sunapee around 3 a.m. after a caller said Joshua Stiller was intoxicated and armed with a handgun, Sunapee police said in a news release. Shortly before police arrived, the caller said Stiller had fired the gun in the barn of the residence, where he then barricaded himself.
Police set up a perimeter and tried to communicate with Stiller, but were unsuccessful, the news release said. The state police SWAT team “arrived and was able to bring the standoff to successful conclusion using gas,” the release said.
The incident lasted almost nine hours and shut down a small portion of Sunapee. Stiller is being held pending his arraignment on Monday on a felony charge of reckless conduct.
