Brattleboro, Vt. — The Windsor High bowling team spent Saturday playing from behind. It didn’t seem to be a problem.

The Yellowjackets won a four-team tournament from the second seed at Brattleboro Bowl, ultimately prevailing over Hartford, Fair Haven and the host Colonels. The Jacks saved their best comeback for the Baker final, dropping the first game in the best-of-three to top-seeded Fair Haven before rallying for the victory.

Rayce Gilbert (213-192), Grayson Frazer (159-175) and Samantha Erskine (161-152) rolled Windsor to second behind Fair Haven in qualifying, setting up a best-of-three Baker with Hartford in the semifinals. The Jacks swept that matchup in two straight games, 118-94 and 152-146.

That set up a final with the Slaters, who took the opener, 161-142. Windsor bounced back with 157-147 and 172-167 wins to claim the day.

Peyton Wardwell (148-122), Cean Lieberman Jr. (189-181) and Alexis Johnston (136-105) helped Hartford take the third seed in qualifying. After dropping the Baker match to Windsor, the Hurricanes rumbled back in the consolation match to top Brattleboro, 105-131, 152-125, 149-139.

Both teams return to the lanes on Saturday. Hartford will entertain South Burlington, Randolph and Brattleboro at Claremont’s Maple Lanes. Windsor is bound for a date at Rutland Bowlarama with White River Valley, Essex and host Fair Haven.

Indoor Track

Lowe BreaksOwn Record Again

Burlington — Abayomi Lowe’s Vermont Division II indoor state record in the 55-meter dash lasted all of a week as the Hartford High senior broke it again during Saturday’s VITA meet at UVM’s Gutterson Field House.

Lowe stopped the clock in 6.64 seconds on the same track on which he recorded a 6.68-second dash the previous Saturday. In addition to Lowe’s victory, teammate Kennedy Mullen broke a Hartford school record in winning the girls 300 (45.40 seconds), Aaron Mitchell took third in the boys 600 in a school-record 1:32.53 and Bethany Davis also wrote her name into school annals with a time of 12:17.36 in the girls 3,000.

Oxbow also had some strong results in the D-II meet, led by a win for Jarret Rock in the boys long jump (19 feet, 4.25 inches) to go with a second to Lowe in the 55 dash (6.89). Timothy Hodges took second in the 55 hurdles (8.77). The 4×200 relay quartet of Brennan Kimball, Hodges, Max Klarich and Rock won their race in 1:40.22. On the girls’ side, Tyrus Rosten was third in the 1,000 (3:41.91) and fourth in the 300 (47.88).

Girls Hockey

Beekmantown (N.Y.) 2Hanover 1

West Lebanon — The visitors from upstate New York broke a 1-1 tie before the second intermission to give the Marauders something they haven’t had in nearly a decade: a two-game winless streak.

The Eagles opened the scoring just short of 12 minutes into the first period, to which Hanover (4-1-1, 5-2-1) answered on Violet Sperry’s second-period rebound goal off of Bryn Kable’s initial shot. The Marauders owned a 26-20 shots advantage on the afternoon.

Hanover, which was held to a 2-2 tie by Exeter midweek, hadn’t gone two games without a win since back-to-back losses to Lebanon (2-1) and St. Thomas-Dover (6-0) on Dec. 19, 2009 and Jan. 5, 2010. That 2009-10 Marauder team still went on to win an NHIAA Division I state title, the first of nine straight heading into this season.

The Marauders head to Souhegan on Wednesday.

U-32 5, Hartford 3

Montpelier — The Raiders scored on four of their first five shots during the first six minutes, dropping the visiting Hurricanes to 0-7.

“Zoe Pfeiffer is a great young goaltender with a great attitude, but it was one of those nights,” said second-year Hartford coach Bill Goldsworthy, who inserted Jacqueline Gour into the net for the second period. “I felt bad for her, but the team kept up a good attitude. It was the best-played game we’ve had since I’ve started coaching here.”

Cayden Shaw, Greer McCarty and Nora Knudsen each scored their first varsity goals for the Hurricanes, who trailed, 4-2, after two periods. Gour made 10 saves and Kylie Clark had two assists and Izzy Stack had one for Hartford, which hosts Burr & Burton on Saturday.

Lebanon visits Brady-Trinity-West on Tuesday.

Boys Hockey

Hanover 5, Nashua North 0

West Lebanon — Will Laycock made his first varsity goal a game-winner and added a second to boot as the Marauders (5-1-0, 6-3-0) blanked the Titans at Campion Rink.

Sylas Oberting set up Laycock’s debut strike in the first period, while Brendan Brigham and Sam Seelig earned helpers on Laycock’s second, which gave the Marauders a 3-0 lead.

The goal followed a Matty Gardner penalty shot conversion caused when a Nashua North player covered the puck in his crease with his glove.

Hans Williams and Oberting provided power-play goals in the third period, Gardner and Camerson Woods posted assists, and goaltender Ben Plottner posted a 12-save shutout.

Hanover is off until hosting Pinkerton on Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Thetford 56, Hazen 48

Thetford — The Panthers (6-1) used the middle period to ramp up their game and hand the Wildcats (5-1) their first VPA Division III loss of the season.

Thetford coach Eric Ward took the knock for bringing his squad out in a half-court defense that Hazen exploited for an 11-4 lead after one quarter. TA picked up the pace and pressure after that and outscored the visitors, 35-17, in the middle stanzas to take control.

“We do a lot of good things, and we will get better; we’re not perfect,” Ward said. “Every game we get contributions from somebody or everybody.”

Kiana Johnson (14 points), Grace Davis (12) and Casey MacVeagh (10) paced the Thetford offense. Namya Benjamin added 12 rebounds off the bench. Emma Colby and Grace Veracka also had good games in substitute roles, Ward said.

Hazen’s Alleigh Gaboree led all scorers with 15 points.

Thetford is slated to visit Montpelier on Tuesday.

Fair Haven 43, Windsor 30

Fair Haven. Vt. — The VPA Division II Slaters made 24 of 28 free throws and overcame a five-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. The hosts also targeted Windsor standout Olivia Rockwood, who had 12 points for her Division III squad.

“They worked on shutting Olivia down, and we didn’t do a good job of having other people take up the scoring,” said Windsor coach Bruce MacKay, whose team visits Newport on Tuesday. “Fair Haven went to the line 18 times in the last quarter.”

White River Valley 40Rivendell 31

South Royalton — Hannah White had 18 points, six of them on 3-point attempts, to pace the Wildcats. Shaunna Simmons had six points for the Raptors (0-6), who host Woodsville on Saturday.

Boys Basketball

Oxbow 85, Richford 55

Richford, Vt. — Matt Emerson had 16 points, Seth Carson had 12 and Bryce Ilsley had 11 and the Olympians remained spotless at 6-0. The visitors led, 29-18, after a quarter of a contest that saw them drain 15 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

“They were playing a 1-3-1 zone, which clogs up the middle and leaves the corners and wings open, so we took what we had,” said Olympians coach Steve Carson, whose team was 10-12 last winter. “We shot a lot of long shots and we made a lot of them.”

Conant 78, Newport 35

Newport — Joey Ackerman had 13 points and Chase Hamilton had 10 for the Tigers (0-6) during a Friday night loss.

Newport, which has been outscored by an average of 24 points and lost five of its six contests by at least 18 points this season, visits Windsor on Tuesday.

Bentley, which plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association, overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits. Will Graber, Quin Foreman and Drew O’Connor scored for Dartmouth, which received 22 saves from Adrian Clark.

Dartmouth coach Bob Gaudet coached his record 967th ECAC game, accomplished during nine seasons at Brown and 22 with the Big Green. He passed former St. Lawrence coach Joe Marsh, who was also the Big Green’s interim women’s coach last winter.
