Nichols won a USA Cup Nordic combined competition in Lake Placid last week, one of four competitions in which he competed. A member of the USA Nordic junior national team as well as a competitor for Hanover’s Ford Sayre Ski Council, Nichols also placed high on the list in other ski jumping and Nordic combined events held last week.
Nichols placed second in the jumping portion of the USA Cup Nordic combined with 97 points, just behind fellow national team member Niklas Malacinski. Nichols made up a 10-second gap once on the 1,200-meter cross country route on the Olympic Jumping Center’s upper loop, winning in 11 minutes, 57 seconds to ultimately edge Malacinski by 15 seconds in the final standings.
Nichols was sixth out of 22 competitors in USA Cup jumping action last Thursday, scoring 180.5 points on jumps of 84 and 78 meters. He followed that up by taking eighth out of 28 athletes in the New York Ski Education Foundation’s New Year’s event, which doubled as a trial for the World Junior Nordic Combined Championship, scoring 181.5 points on jumps of 81.5 and 79.5 meters.
One day later, Nichols finished third overall and first among Americans in the NYSEF New Year’s Nordic Combined race on Saturday, ranking third in the jumping portion with 92.5 points before completing the cross country race in 24:05. He trailed only two Chinese athletes in the final rankings.

Five years into the event’s existence, Wayne’s World owner Wayne Burwell and his peers are expanding their reach from two gyms to seven with the hope of raising $20,000 for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Lebanon. The event will offer two means for achieving that goal.
Each of the seven facilities will host an open boot camp from 10-11 a.m. At a cost of $20, participants can put in some sweat equity for an hour with their favorite trainers and gyms.
At 11 a.m., the tables get turned. Participants can take a train-your-trainer pledge of $5 per minute, where they get to dictate exercises for their trainers to perform. Train your trainer continues until 3 p.m.
For more information on the event, including a list of participating gyms, or to get involved in the fun and fundraising, contact Burwell at waynesworldeft@gmail.com.
