Local Roundup: Big First Period Sends Raiders Hockey Past Kingswood

West Lebanon — The Lebanon-Stevens-Mount Royal boys hockey team returned to NHIAA Division II action in style on Wednesday night with a 5-4 defeat of Kingswood at Campion Rink.

Sophomore defenseman Trey Chickering had two goals and two assists, and classmate and forward Aidan Yates had a goal and an assist.

“When our kids show up and play, we can stay with most teams,” Raiders coach Jim Damren said. “I’m guessing we’ll be somewhere in the top third of the division if we continue to progress. It’s going to come down to whether our young guys buy into what we’re doing and how quickly they figure out high school hockey.”

The Raiders led, 3-1, after one period, with Yates, Brian Daly and Andrew Duany scoring. Chickering tallied twice during the second period to give the hosts a 4-2 lead. Kingswood scored twice during the last five minutes, including one during the final minute and with the goaltender pulled for an extra skater.

Mason Adams had two assists and Jon Cloud and Will Forman had one each for the Raiders, who are 3-3 overall and 2-2 in division play. They host Merrimack on Saturday and undefeated D-III leaders John Stark-Hopkinton on Monday.

Hanover 4, Exeter 1

Exeter, n.h. — Hans Williams and Joey Goff each had a goal and an assist, Sylas Oberting and Cameron Woods each had two assists and Luke Ives made 14 saves to lift the Marauders to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in NHIAA Division I play.

Charlie Plottner opened the scoring during the first period, Patrick Daley recorded a shorthanded tally during the middle stanza and Williams and Goff struck before the second intermission. Exeter scored with less than a minute remaining. Hanover, which also received assists from Matty Gardner and Rowan Wilson, hosts Nashua North at 3:50 p.m. on Saturday.

Rutland 5, Hartford 0

Rutland — Ross McFate made 27 saves but the Hurricanes dropped to 0-4-1. Hartford hosts Missisquoi on Wednesday.

Girls Hockey

Spaulding 4, Hartford 2

White River Junction — Sophomore Izzy Stack scored her first two varsity goals to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead after a period. Hartford (0-6) received a Jasmine Wilson assist and 22 saves from Zoey Pfeiffer, who made her sixth consecutive start.

Hartford coach Bill Goldsworthy said Pfeiffer has played in the absence of last season’s starter, Jaqueline Gour, who only recently returned from illness.

“I’d like a No. 1 goalie to emerge, so we’re going to let them battle it out from here on,” said Goldsworthy, who is 1-25-1 since taking over the team before last season. “I’m pretty patient, and I think it’s only a year or two until we’re competing at a championship level.”

The Hurricanes visit U-32 on Saturday.

Woodstock — Bridget Black made 21 saves for the Wasps, who fell to 3-5. Woodstock hosts Rutland on Saturday.

Mount Royal 66Concord Christian 27

Concord — Andrew Normandin had 26 points and the Knights improved to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in NHIAA Division IV. Mount Royal, which received 14 points from Louis Larosiliere, hosts Nute on Friday.

Fall Mountain 54, Stevens 52

Langdon, n.h. — Clay Wadsworth had 13 points and Derrick Stanhope had 11, but the Cardinals (0-4) surrendered a Joey Murdoch layup with 13 seconds remaining and missed a shot to tie the game at the final horn. Stevens hosts Merrimack Valley on Friday.

Girls Basketball

Oxbow 56, Stowe 26

Bradford — The O’s jumped out to a 31-10 lead by halftime to improve to 4-2.

Melanie Neil and Mariah Shumway combined for 11 steals and 20 points for Oxbow. Lauren Wright added eight points, while Emma Parkin, Kaysea Neil and Rachel Spear added six points each.

The Olympians travel to Williamstown on Tuesday.

Mount Royal 67Concord Christian 3

Concord — Alexis Matte had 31 points, four rebounds, eight steals and three assists for the Knights, who led, 41-3, at halftime of the NHIAA Division IV game.

“We stopped pressing in the second quarter,” Mount Royal coach Derek Tremblay said. “And we got our bench players in during the second half.”

Jacinta Hogan and Sophie LaRose each had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Knights (5-3), who visit Lin-Wood on Monday.

Lyndon 41, Hartford 38

White River Junction — The Hurricanes fell to 0-6 despite 10 points from Kennedy Mullen, who sank three shots from beyond the 3-point arc, and nine points each from Davan Murphy and Beth Dobrich.

“We just put them on the (free-throw) line too often, and they made too many,” said Hartford coach Heidi Bushway, who watched the Vikings sink 11 of 19 from the charity stripe.

The Hurricanes, who made two of their six free throws, host Brattleboro on Monday.

Fall Mountain 50, Stevens 41

Langdon, n.h. — The Wildcats (7-0) maintained their perfect mark atop NHIAA Division III, although the D-II Cardinals (1-5) didn’t make it easy on them.

Sydney Miller had 13 points to lead the visitors, who were outscored, 24-17, in the middle periods as Fall Mountain gained its cushion. Zahna Rice and Jenna Pond both contributed eight points, with Pond hitting both of the Cardinals’ 3-pointers.

Stevens continues a four-game league road trip at Merrimack Valley on Friday.

Randolph 49, Woodstock 29

Randolph — Jane Lackley had 10 points, but the Wasps tumbled to 3-3. Woodstock hosts Mill River on Thursday.

Men’s Basketball

Vermont 73, Dartmouth 59

Burlington — Anthony Lamb had 21 points, matched a career-best with 14 rebounds and blocked a career-high six shots to lead Vermont over Dartmouth.

Vermont (10-4) has beaten Dartmouth (9-7) in 11 straight games, its longest active winning streak against a nonconference opponent. Lamb also surpassed 1,000 career points, the 12th Catamount to reach the milestone during his junior season or sooner.

Isaiah Moll added 18 points and Ben Shungu had 10 for the Catamounts.

Chris Knight scored 19 points on 8-of-24 shooting, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead Dartmouth. Brendan Barry made three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, and Ian Sistare chipped in with 11.

The Catamounts never trailed and built a 36-28 halftime lead. Lamb eclipsed 1,000 points with a layup with 5:44 left in the first half.

James Foye hit a 3 to pull the Big Green to 49-45 with 12:32 left, but they didn’t get closer.

Women’s Basketball

Colby-Sawyer 67Salem State 54

New London — Former Sunapee High star Lexie Hamilton had 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks to boost the Chargers to 7-4. Salem State fell to 2-10 after the nonconference game.

Onetime Lebanon High player Joslin Wainwright had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Colby-Sawyer, which visits Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Thomas College on Saturday.
