Trump Nominates Former Police Chief As Vermont U.S. Marshal

Montpelier — President Donald Trump has nominated a retired police chief to be Vermont’s next U.S. marshal.

Brad LaRose, who was nominated on Wednesday, had been a police officer in Essex for more than 36 years, including more than five years as chief. He retired in January.

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy and Gov. Phil Scott jointly recommended LaRose to Trump. They wrote that LaRose understands the challenges of the opioid epidemic and the value of interagency coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. They said as a police chief, LaRose has contributed personnel to the joint drug task force and helped his officers transition into, and out of, undercover work.

The U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for capturing fugitives and sex offenders, managing federal prisoners, and protecting federal courthouses.

Man Dies While Biking to Raise CHaD Money

Dover, n.h. — Authorities say a man making a cross-country trip on a recumbent bicycle to raise money for children with cancer was struck and killed on a Mississippi highway.

James Dobson, of Lebanon, Maine, started in New Hampshire on Oct. 1 for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. His goal was to ride 60 miles daily, to San Diego.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said the 32-year-old Dobson was on Highway 98 west of Hattiesburg on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck from behind by a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation.

Keith Loud, the hospital’s physician in chief, said in a statement he was moved not only by Dobson’s dedication, but the courage it took to ride across the country in an effort to give back.

Remains of Missing New Hampshire Woman ID’d in Tennessee

Authorities piecing together the life of a deceased man suspected of killing at least six women and children say the remains of a New Hampshire woman missing since 1984 have been identified in Tennessee.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said Elizabeth Lamotte wasn’t reported as a missing person to Manchester police until last year after authorities said suspected serial killer Terry Rasmussen had a wife named Elizabeth in the 1980s.

Lamotte was 17 when she disappeared from New Hampshire’s youth detention center. Two brothers provided DNA samples that were matched to the remains of a woman found murdered in Tennessee in 1985.
