Concord — The New Hampshire Soccer Coaches Association recognized Sunapee High’s first NHIAA boys soccer championship squad with three first-team all-state selections recently.

Defender Matthew Nangeroni, midfielder Gabe Spaudling and striker Michael Mullen led the Lakers’ all-state list after playing significant roles in Sunapee’s 17-3-0 season. The Lakers capped off the campaign with a 1-0 defeat of Newmarket in the NHIAA Division IV state final on Nov. 3 at Southern New Hampshire University.

The championship was both the first in the sport for the school and the first for 22-year head coach Jack Iacopino.

Nangeroni fronted a Sunapee defense that allowed just 17 goals in 20 contests and recorded 10 shutouts. The Lakers were at their defensive best at the end of the season, allowing just two goals in their final eight matches and shutting out the last five in succession.

Hastings provided key linking play out of the midfield, contributing two goals and six assists while also frequently dropping back to assist the defense. Mullen used his front-line speed to amass an Upper Valley-best 36 goals this fall, the last coming in the final two minutes of the 1-0 championship defeat of Newmarket, which handed Sunapee its last pre-postseason defeat.

Midfielder Lane Smith made the D-IV second team, and Sunapee’s Jon Reed was voted the junior varsity coach of the year. Woodsville’s Alex Enderson made the second team, and the Engineers’ Corey Bemis and Conner Maccini joined Newport’s Cooper Skarin on the honorable-mention roster.

Although their title aspirations were dashed in the semifinals, Sunapee girls earned two first-team spots in Division IV. Striker Abby Pollari landed one after a 30-goal season, and midfielder Ellie Frederick grabbed the other following a 10-goal campaign. The Lakers’ Sylvia Dalton and Marybeth Groton made the second team, Hannah Cooney earned honorable mention and Norm Dalton won the JV coach of the year award.

Woodsville’s Ny Adamkowski and Olivia Sarkis also made second team. Mount Royal’s Jacinta Hogan received honorable mention.

Hanover midfielder Charlie Adams fronted a five-player group on the NHSCA Division I boys all-state squad. Adams, a first-team all-stater who set several Hanover program scoring marks along the way, also made the United Soccer Coaches’ all-New England team following a 21-goal, 10-assist season. Defender Kyle Doucette made the first team, striker Christo Dragnev finished on the second team, and middies Liam Collins and Matty Gardner garnered honorable mentions.

The Hanover High girls also did well in the wake of their NHIAA Division II championship, won in a penalty-kick shootout over Milford on Nov. 4. The Marauders produced first-teamers in midfielders Bryn Kable and Pepper Joseph, a second-teamer in striker Riley Craft and an honorable mention choice in defender Abigail Wilson. They joined Lebanon’s Sally Rainey, the first-team selection at goalkeeper.

The remainder of the area’s NHSCA all-staters:

Division II boys: Lebanon — midfielder Logan Falzarano (first team), midfielder Patrick Mason (second team). Stevens — goalkeeper Cooper Moote (honorable mention).

Division III boys: Mascoma — midfielder Ben Schwarz (honorable mention).

Division III girls: Stevens — striker Audrey Puksta (first team), defender Alexis Aiken (first team), midfielder Brooke Bonneau (honorable mention).

Bracken Player of Week

Hanover — Dartmouth senior forward Tess Bracken earned the first ECAC Hockey player of the week honor of her career this week, producing four points in three games during the Big Green’s 1-1-1 week.

Bracken provided the opening and game-winning goals in a 3-1 defeat of Vermont last Tuesday. She added a goal in Friday’s loss to RIT and added an assist in Saturday’s tie with the Tigers.

The recognition is the first for Dartmouth since Christina Honor was named ECAC goalie of the week in February. The Big Green hadn’t had a player of the week since Ailish Forfar in February 2015.
