Veterans Day Assembly in South Strafford

10 a.m.

The Newton School, 243 Route 132.

The Newton School hosts its annual Veterans Day commemoration. The Heritage Brass Ensemble, led by Lydia Lowery Busler, will provide music, including Elgarโ€™s โ€œNimrodโ€ Variation, used for Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth. Veterans Day Assembly in Canaan

Canaan Elementary School, 31 School St.

The school hosts an assembly to commemorate Veterans Day and display three โ€œWalls of Honorโ€ bearing the names of students and staff members who are past and present veterans. American Legion Post No. 55 will serve as honor guard. Free. 603-523-4312.

Veterans Day Luncheon and Ceremony in Woodstock

11:45 a.m.

Thompson Senior Center, 99 Senior Lane.

The Thompson hosts a luncheon for veterans. At 11:45 a.m., the American Legion will lead a short flag ceremony, and poppies from the centerโ€™s poppy project will be displayed in honor of American war veterans. A group photo will be taken. Veterans Day Ceremony in South Royalton

2-4 p.m.

Vermont Law School, 164 Chelsea St.

The Veteran Law Student Association will hold a ceremony at the flagpole outside Waterman Hall, followed by a brief presentation in Yates Common Room by VLS graduate Rusty Sachs, a Marine Corps helicopter pilot in Vietnam and, following discharge, an active member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (as featured in the documentary Winter Soldier). An open microphone at the end of the presentation will be available for respectful comments or short stories. Free. The community is invited to submit photos of local veterans in uniform for a slide show that will play during the event. Include a description of 75 words or less. โ€œThe Telling Projectโ€ in Randolph

The Telling Project turns stories of military service into a stage play through which veterans and their family members enact their stories before a theater audience. Created in 2008, the project works to deepen understanding among veterans, their families and their civilian friends and neighbors. The Chandler production features nine participants who share their personal narratives, spanning the years from the Vietnam War to the present-day conflicts in the Middle East. Armistice Day Commemoration in Lebanon

The Lebanon Historical Society sponsors a display of World War I items from local organizations and individuals in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. The Baker Bells will play the service hymns in a community-wide moment of observation for Veterans Day and to mark the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. Veterans Day Lunch and Flag-Raising Ceremony in Orford

Orford Congregational Church, 617 Route 10.

The Orford/Fairlee Girl Scouts host a Veterans Day lunch to honor veterans, guardsmen and reservists from Orford and Fairlee, followed by a slide show and flag-raising ceremony that are open to the public. The Orford Historical Society will present a veterans memorabilia display. The lunch takes place at 12 p.m.; the slide presentation begins at 1:15 p.m. Veterans are invited to contribute photos and information. Free. Veterans Day Talk: โ€œRosieโ€™s Momโ€ in Grantham

One hundred years ago, a full generation before Rosie the Riveter, American women rolled up their sleeves and entered war industries where they had never been welcome before. They ran powerful machinery, learned new skills and faced the hostility of the men in the shops.

In this illustrated lecture, historian Carrie Brown reveals these womenโ€™s courage and their hard work, asks what impact โ€œthe Great Warโ€ had on their lives and explores how they helped shape the work their more-famous daughters would do in the next world war. Army veterans and Dartmouth graduates Jason Hartwig and Brad Wolcott discuss โ€œImprints and Consequences of War: Personal Reflections of Dartmouth Alumni Veterans.โ€ Hartwig served five years as an armor officer in the Army, leading a tank platoon during a deployment to Baghdad, Iraq, from March 2008 to March 2009 and a reconnaissance platoon in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from July 2010 to July 2011. Wolcott served as a cavalry officer in the Army from 2006-2010, including 13 months in Iraq as a scout platoon leader. Free. 603-646-2207.
