“Patients will benefit greatly from this technology with less callbacks, increased comfort, and more precise imaging,” Tammy Matheson, manager of radiology at the hospital, said in a news release.
The new mammogram technology takes multiple X-rays of breast tissue to recreate a 3-D picture of the breast. The technology differs from traditional mammography, which obtains just a single image. Because of this, the 3-D option offers better detection and increased comfort with the same amount of radiation as a traditional mammogram.
Alice Peck Day and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center are among the first clinics in New Hampshire to offer the system, which can encourage more women to get mammograms by reducing discomfort.
