Concord — New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu has signed a controversial voting rights bill he previously opposed.
Current law allows college students and others who consider the state their domicile to vote without being subject to residency requirements, such as getting a New Hampshire driver’s license.
Lawmakers passed a bill to end the distinction between full-fledged residents and those who claim the state as their domicile for voting, but Sununu delayed action on it and asked the state Supreme Court to weigh in.
The court issued a 3-2 advisory opinion Thursday saying the Constitution doesn’t require giving students special status. Opponents argue it will discourage voting, but the court said the state has a compelling reason for making the change.
Sununu signed the bill today. He says it restores equality and fairness to elections.
