Nighthawks Salvage Twinbill Split  With Westerners

Danbury, Conn. — The Upper Valley Nighthawks hit three home runs in Game 2 to earn a 14-inning doubleheader split with the Danbury Westerners, 5-9, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Rogers Park.

North Florida’s Chris Berry led the way in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs batting lead-off. Binghamton’s Anthony Meduri hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, helping the Nighthawks build a 2-0 advantage. Berry’s two-run blast in the seventh added the insurance.

Meanwhile, Upper Valley’s starters got the job done. Starter Danny Wirchansky (Pace) threw three scoreless innings, David Sampson (Plymouth) allowed an unearned run in the fourth and Cole Stetzar (Saint Joseph’s) threw four strikeouts in the final three innings to secure the save.

Upper Valley managed 10 hits and forced Danbury to strand six runners on base. It was a stark contrast to Game 1.

Nighthawks starting pitcher Reid VanScoter (Binghamton) was shelled in the opener for seven hits, six runs — four earned — two walks and no strikeouts in four innings. Jack Ipsen (Bryant) gave up three hits and two runs in relief. Wes Bucher (West Georgia) allowed another run in the seventh.

Upper Valley’s offense, on the other hand, couldn’t keep up. It scored twice on two errors in the second inning to get on the board. Anthony Quirion (Lamar) followed-up with a two-run home run in the third inning. The Nighthawks managed three hits in the final four innings in the loss.

UV (14-13) travels to Keene’s Alumni Field today at 6:30 p.m. for a crucial Northern Division matchup with the Swamp Bats (16-12), who have won five straight.

Touchline V 4, Fall Mountain 0

Norwich — Eric Tysinger had a goal and an assist as Touchline V improved to 6-1 in a game that was shortened by 20 minutes due to rain.

Zane Schiffman, Mitchell Rowley and C.J. Wheelan all had goals for Touchline. Jackson Fisher made four saves.

Touchline hosts Centerline at Huntley Meadows on Thursday.
