Strafford — The Thetford Elementary School U10 softball team, many of whose members were new to the sport when the season started, capped their spring by winning the Central Vermont League tournament on June 20.

Thetford went into the four-team tournament seeded third, then won three of its four games to take the championship.

Thetford opened with a narrow 9-7 defeat of Bethel and a 15-14 squeaker victory over South Royalton on June 16. South Royalton leveled things with a 16-2 defeat of Thetford the following day, but the Panthers’ overall mark secured their spot in the finals.

After a two-day delay for weather, Thetford and South Royalton met one more time on June 20 for the tournament crown. Thetford prevailed, 19-12.

The roster: Adrianna Hayes (outfield), Jaiden Wilson (outfield), Eden Fifield (catcher/outfield), Maryann Maxfield (first base-pitcher), Logan Wells (shortstop-outfield), Mckayla Stanley (pitcher); Zoey Clark (shortstop-catcher-outfield), Jailyn Mattson (outfield), Carly Thurston (catcher-outfield), Ruth Brooks (second base), Miranda Stanley (third base), Jayde Doody (shortstop-catcher) and Meredith Sloop (catcher-outfield).

Todd and Michelle Stanley, Michelle Cook, Melanie Durkee and Babianne Stearns served as coached.

UVAC Second At Seacoast Meet

Dover, n.h. — Upper Valley Aquatic Club athletes won three gold medals and combined to win two relays to highlight a second-place team finish at the Seacoast Swimming Trial-Finals Meet last weekend.

On the boys side, Grantham’s Shaun Kronenwetter provided a victory in the 50 freestyle in 25.31 seconds and finished with 40 points based on results in other raced, all of which ended with a top-10 result.

Hanover’s Kristian Hansen had a team-best 45 points thanks to second-place finishes in the 200 free (2:03.60) and 400 free (4:18.34). Hartland’s Jack Wadsworth was right behind with 44 points over five races, topped by a fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.89).

The UVAC girls provided pair of individual victories. Rosie Keith, competing in 10 races, grabbed a win in the 50 free (30.56) among ages 12 and under.

Hanover’s Maggie Wenger, 16, added the other by taking the 200 free (2:11.73) in her 16-year-old age group.

Like Kronenwetter, Wenger posted top-10s in all of her events to score a team-best 41 points. Lebanon’s Clare Brown was right behind with 40 points thanks to five top 10s headlined by fourths in the 200 free (2:17.66) and 200 breaststroke (2:55.04) among 17-year-olds.

The first and third days of the competition will include an event, the national owner-handler series, for exhibitors trying to land a spot at the AKC’s national championship in Orlando, Fla., in December.

Dog show tours will be available through the weekend.
