Cleveland — Tobin Heath scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute in her return from injury and the U.S. women’s national team beat China, 2-1, on Tuesday night to sweep the two-game exhibition series.

Three minutes after China tied it at 1 on Li Ying’s fast-break goal, Heath chipped the goalkeeper on a mis-hit.

It was Heath’s first game with the national team since appearing as a substitute in a friendly against New Zealand last September. She had surgery to remove bone growth on her right ankle in early January.

Megan Rapinoe put the U.S. ahead in the 35th by heading home Christen Press’ cross at the far post. Press became the 37th player to appear in 100 matches for the U.S.

Madrid Taps Spain’s Lopetegui

Madrid — Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Spain coach Julen Lopetegui will become the club’s manager after the World Cup.

Madrid said in a short statement that Lopetegui has agreed to coach the Champions League winners for the next three seasons. He will take the place of Zinedine Zidane.

Lopetegui has kept Spain unbeaten through 20 matches since taking over two years ago from Vicente del Bosque following the team’s failure to successfully defend its title at the 2016 European Championship.

Vedder Vinyl Brings Cubs Tix

Chicago — Eddie Vedder’s support of the Chicago Cubs remains strong.

The Pearl Jam frontman’s new 7-inch vinyl single will be given out to those who buy special tickets to the July 6 game between the Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

Pressed on blue and red vinyl, the record features Vedder’s 2007 Cubs song All the Way. The flip side features fan Steve Goodman’s 1984 tribute Go Cubs, Go.

Astros Owner Assumes Tourney

The Houston Open is moving to the fall on the PGA Tour under the guidance of Houston Astros owner Jim Crane.

The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday the Astros Foundation will be the host organization that runs the tournament when the Houston Open returns to the schedule in the fall of 2019.

The Houston Golf Association had run the tournament since 1946.

The purse will be $7.5 million.

That means the Houston Open will not be on the schedule for next season, which starts in October. The last time it wasn’t part of the PGA Tour schedule was in 1969, Houston hosted the U.S. Open.

The move to the fall paves the way for Minnesota to take Houston’s spot in the main portion of the schedule next summer.
