White River Junction — Anthony Quirion hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Upper Valley Nighthawks defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 4-1, on Saturday in their NECBL home opener at the Maxfield Sports Complex.

The Nighthawks prevailed despite managing only three hits off six Muskrat pitchers.

Quirion’s blast off Erry Baldayac (0-1), who allowed three runs and two of Upper Valley’s hits in ⅓ inning, was part of a three-run rally that snapped a 1-1 tie in front of an announced crowd of 967. Christopher Berry, who led off the inning with a walk, also scored on the homer.

Later in the inning, Eric Feliz singled to score Hunter Gibson (walk). Quiron’s fourth-inning double was the Nighthawks’ only other hit.

Upper Valley starter Reid VanScoter (1-0) allowed two hits over six innings to earn the win. He struck out seven and walked one. Cole Stetzar allowed two hits over three innings to collect the save.

The Nighthawks greet the Mystic Schooners at 5 p.m. today.

New England Meet Held

Durham, n.h. — Several Upper Valley athletes participated in the New England Interscholastic Track & Field Championship Meet at the University of New Hampshire’s Wildcat Stadium.

Lebanon’s Kath Merchant was third in the javelin with a throw of 126-10, one spot ahead of Woodstock’s Grace Vollers (124-00) and 12th in the discus with a heave of 119-02.

Oxbow’s Izzy Giesing was fifth in the 800 meters (2:13.71), and twin sister Hannah Giesing was 27th in the 400, while the Olympians’ Kelly Daigle was 27th in the discus.

Thetford’s Meaggie Balch was 14th in the 3,200, and teammates Grace Clement and Grace Davis were part of a five-way tie for 20th in the high jump. Hartford’s Morgan White was 32nd in the shot put, and teammate Kennedy Mullen tied for 19th in the triple jump. Mullen also was 19th in the 400 meters.

The Hanover team of Zoe Onyango, Peiper Thomas, Anna Stafford and Ella Maclean was 18th in the 4×100 relay.

In boys events, Hartford’s Abayomi Lowe was eighth in the 400 meters, and Rivendell’s Owen Pelletier was 11th in the long jump and 21st, triple jump, 42-02

The Thetford quartet of Dylan Thorburn, Clifford Ransom, Tad Darrah and Malcolm Silver-Van Meter was 20th in the 4×800 relay. Hanover’s Kyle Doucette was 12th in the 200, and teammate Colm Seigne was 15th in the 800.

Lebanon’s Marcus Roper was 16th in the shot put.
